So I received something on this and I'm wondering if anyone actually signs up for this stuff? Is it worth it? Do you feel like it actually adds something to your resume or is it completely unnecessary?
Thanks in advance! 1/15/2008 2:56:17 PM |

I think it adds something, not much though.
It's somewhat selective, I think the top 15% of your College. I know I've personally had that catch the eye of a couple of interviewers for internships. But I'm assuming for the full-time jobs it didn't do much else than take up room and make it look more full...But, if it helped with internships, then I suppose it helped w/ the full-time job, in a round-about way.
I never used the internship services or anything they say they provide, so I can't comment on them. 1/15/2008 3:13:52 PM |

If you get good grades you will get dozen various honor societies over time (eaching wanting money, I joined a few mainly because my parents made me and were footing the fee).
I forgot the name of the one that they actually put in the program at graduation (thats the real prestigious one). 1/15/2008 6:27:10 PM |

The most selective honor society on campus is Phi Kappa Phi - it invites the top 7.5% of the Junior class (university wide) and the top 10% of the senior class (university wide). A great majority of inductees have a perfect 4.0 and I believe the lowest GPA out of new inductees for this past induction was ~ 3.79.
The other major honor society that holds a good deal of weight on your CV/Resume is Phi Beta Kappa. It invites ~ 15% of the Junior and Senior classes but specializes more in the liberal arts and interdisciplinary majors and not in Physical, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences. That being said, if you are in one of those majors you might find yourself excluded from their criteria based on your discipline of study.
Almost every discipline has its own honor society invites members who major in that particular discipline, those are always worth looking into as well. They typically have GPA requirements in the 3.25-3.5 range and require a Junior status or higher. But I'm speaking in general, not every society follows these guidelines exactly. 1/15/2008 7:36:25 PM |

Thanks for the info. I've received some different ones, but the others haven't nagged like golden key has. I guess I should have paid the others a little more attention, but the fees were a turnoff. 1/15/2008 10:02:35 PM |

Tau Beta Pi is also fairly well-recognized for engineers. 1/15/2008 10:12:57 PM |

The Golden Key honor society is actually really prestigious. Only the top 15% of your class get nominated, and it has been around for a long time. My parents knew about the honor society when they where in college. They don't have a very active local chapter, like NSCS, but they do offer occasional activities to get involved with. I wouldn't just disregard the invitation. Plus, when you graduate you'll receive honors cords. 1/17/2008 6:01:31 PM |
