Has anyone else been following this? For those that haven't--quick backstory.
12/14/07 Marine Lauterbach, 8 months pregnant, leaves her house after a phone call with her mother and never returns. She was pregnant with a child who was possibly the result of the alleged rape by another Marine, Cesar Laurean. She was supposed to testify against him a few days after she went missing.
Laurean cut and ran on Friday, the same time his wife gave a note to investigators that Lauterbach had committed suicide and Laurean buried her in their backyard. Tuesday they identified the charred remains of a woman and a baby as being Lauterbach and her child. The cause of death of Lauterbach was blunt force trauma to the head. Laurean is now on the run; car found last night at a gas station near RDU.
For those that HAVE been following this...Is it just me--or shouldn't they be questioning the wife of Laurean a bit more? Reports are now saying that before the trial, Lauterbach said she did not feel threatened by Laurean. With that in combination of the letter that his WIFE gave the investigators, makes me think that maybe wifey killed Lauterbach, Laurean helped her cover it up, and is now taking the heat for it and running. She would have just as much to lose if Laurean was convicted of rape......I think this is some kind of twisted love triangle thing.
/my law and order theory
oh, and sorry if this was somewhere else--I searched. If so, Omar lock and I'll post this in that thread.

It is rather odd that he never violated the protective order against him, nor did Lauterbach say that she felt unsafe around Laurean.
It is an incredibly odd story, which I'm sure will be made into a Lifetime movie soon enough... 1/16/2008 10:17:05 AM |

^^her own mother told the police that she was a compulsive liar and that she was still continuing a relationship with the man she accused of raping her. The military also stopped investigating after hearing confirmed reports of this.

I want to know why the wife waited 4 weeks to report that the burnt remains of a pregnant woman were sitting in a very shallow grave in her backyard. Most people would have been driven crazy by the smell alone. I guess any woman that would stay with a husband that continued to cheat on her with a psycho bitch would probably try to keep them out of prison at all cost.
I doubt she was actively involved in the murder, but she definitely tried to cover it up. 1/16/2008 12:04:28 PM |

the husband left a note saying that he buried the marine in the back yard after she committed suicide. The wife got the note and turned it over to authorities immediately. Unfortunately the husband had already fled when she got the note.
oh and the baby was not laureans

It just doesn't make sense. Isn't it rather unlikely that a person committed suicide via blunt force trauma to the head.
So it would make sense that Laurean killed her. But if the baby wasn't his, then why the hell would he do that? Granted, that's not the only motive for murder, but it seems the most likely.
^It's surprising that Lauterbach was killed on December 14th and she didn't notice that the back yard had been dug up, or that there was new paint on some of the walls in the house.... 1/16/2008 1:25:09 PM |

well obviously it wasnt suicide. Thats just what the note said.
I know when I lived in a house with a backyard, I hardly ever went out there. I dont know. I see your point but at the same time I feel that the wife is innocent. Some girls are extremely gullible and he could have easily made up some lie that she believed. Not everyone puts 2 and 2 together.
as far as motive, i believe that laurean thought it was his at the time of the murder. They only said it wasnt recently.

I know it wasn't suicide, but what I'm surprised about is that Laurean killed her. That's what doesnt make sense. But who knows what happened in the house.... 1/16/2008 1:34:30 PM |

Update to the case...
Quote : | "The affidavit states Cesar Laurean's wife, Christina, said her husband was accused of rape in May 2007, and that her husband told her he did not do it.
Christina said she found in July 2007 that Lauterbach was pregnant. Christina said her husband claimed he was not the father of the baby, that he did not know what was next with the case but that he had retained legal counsel.
The affidavit states Laurean's wife said she and her husband went to an attorney's office on the morning of January 10, and while on the way, her husband asked her "If she was with him on this." She says she told him "I don't know. Is there anything you have not told me?"
Christina Laurean said her husband told her that on December 15, Maria Lauterbach visited their home and told Cesar she was planning to leave the area. Laurean's wife said her husband claimed Lauterbach demanded money, and he went to the bus station with Lauterbach and helped her buy a bus ticket.
Laurean's wife said her husband told her Lauterbach came back to their home on the evening of December 15, told Laurean that her plan had failed and an argument ensued. Laurean's wife said her husband claimed Lauterbach was disoriented, agitated and acted differently, then Lauterbach produced a knife and killed herself by slitting her throat." |
