Quote : | "The United States Constitution never uses the word "God" or makes mention of any religion, drawing its sole authority from "We the People." However, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee thinks it's time to put an end to that.
"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."" |

Newsweek did a coverstory on him in December and one of the points was that as a canadate one of his weeknesses were some of the outwardly religous political statements made in his early career, and that canadates would probably use that against him in campaining. I haven't seen the news in 2 days but im surprised i haven't seen this yet, and even more surprised that he made such an openly controversial and stance when hes up in polls and knows that it is such a major issue for more liberal voters. 1/16/2008 1:31:30 PM |

Huckabee's everything that's wrong with the GOP -- socially conservative, fiscally liberal.
btw, there's a great editorial on him in the current issue of Forbes

In addition, how many lawmakers give a flying fuck about the Constitution to begin with? 1/16/2008 7:11:02 PM |

In further addition, good for Mike Huckabee. Now there's no way on God's green Earth that he'll be elected President.

thank god....i posted in the other thread how i was gonna let my die hard repub friend back home know about this
he responded earlier today...his response was "political suicide"
i replied back with "seems like the only 2 repubs worth a damn are romney and mccain"...although i dont really like romney, he is 4th on my list of people i'd vote for and therefore one of the 3 before him will probably be elected first, plus as shitty as our economy has been looking lately, i think he wouldnt fuck it up that bad
1. obama 2. mccain 3. clinton 4. romney there is literally no one else i'd vote for
also i take back the comment i posted like last week about mccain/huckabee ticket being the strongest repub ticket] 1/16/2008 7:49:07 PM |

what is this "Constitution" of which you speak? 1/16/2008 8:02:25 PM |

^ It's this "living breathing" document that gives gov't complete authority over your life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
It gets in the way sometimes of "doing the right thing", but we can usually get around it. After all, it was written by "old rich white men" who owned slaves and didn't really understand how complicated life would become.
It has this clause in it about "General Welfare". That means we can take whatever money we want to do all sorts of good things for folks.
It has some amendments too, like the one that says you can own a gun if you're a hunter or in a gov't controlled miltia.
It's a pretty cool document as long as you don't take it too seriously. 1/16/2008 8:47:22 PM |

^ the beauty of his statement is that he wants to change it to whatever he thinks or interprets "God's standard" to be. gives him quite a bit of leeway, i'd say 1/16/2008 10:05:49 PM |

At least it's not Romney saying this... Constitutional amendment for a Mormon Nation!
Anyway, yeah, this is a stupid thing of him to say... up until this I was starting to think he might not be a completely terrible president if elected. 1/16/2008 10:54:21 PM |
