I'm curious as to what spinal injury they thought they were going to diagnose via a rectal exam.

its a standard thing when someone comes in with a suspected spinal injury

and yep if you start swinging at med workers when you have a head injury, you get sedated and intubated.

fuck us getting hurt by some crazy ass patient that we are trying to help

basically its a quick and painless way to check for complete cord injury


while you wait for a CT scanner or radiology to show you the cspine.


if there is no rectal tone you can go ahead and immediately initiate the solumedrol protocol.


one of the early signs of impending loss of consciousness and or brain injury is agitation and combativeness.



later on during the recovery phase of a closed head injury when we bring you out of sedation there are usually some personality changes and well, brain injury patients just do some stupid impulsive goofy shit.

funny (well not funny haha, more funny fucked-up) thing is that if they hadn't been thorough, and had just treated the head injury and the guy had some long term effects or even died, the hospital would still be getting sued. they're screwed both ways.

movement and intact sensation dont always mean much if there is a spinal injury


had a patient with a c-2 fx with no loss of motion or sensation

but while we were putting him in the halo he fucking freaked out and started fighting


hes a quad now

ok fine laymans terms


dude came in with a hangmans fracture, a very high spinal cord injury


he had a floppy asshole, but could feel everything and move everything and was a lucky motherfucker to not be paralyzed from flying thru his windshield from not wearing a seatbelt.


while he was getting his halo -- the big metal cage that is screwed into his skull to hold his head still so the bones can mend -- he spazzed out and started fighting, all of that movement caused a worse spinal cord injury and now he is paralyzed.


it took enough Intravenous ativan to knock a cow down to make him chill the fuck out
