man oh man...i wish i wouldnt have been 16 in the year 2000 and not know as much about politics...what is up with this? every station keeps talking about how in 2000 mccain got smacked in south carolina...they almost have a negative stigma about it, similar to how whores have a negative stigma....like for example, i just heard something to the effect "he went in after getting killed in 2000 and got the establishment to back him"

i also heard how he got attacked like crazy in SC in 2000 and even heard something to the effect that he fathered a black child in SC

what is the deal

all i remember about 2000 was that bush won iowa i think, then mccain got nh, then bush won in SC

in 2000, Bush and Karl Rove sucker punched McCain in SC, spreading lies and rumors about him.

For example, Rove organized a large state-wide telephone survey, and one of the questions was something like "Would your opinion of McCain change if it was discovered he fathered a black 'love-child'?"
Then a day or two after the large survey, he got a story of McCain put into most of the large newspapers with a picture of McCain and a black child, the implication being that this was "the black love-child". It was, however, a black child that John McCain and his wife adopted from Bangladeshi.

Bush raked McCain across the coals in SC just so he could win. It's a shame McCain decided to back Bush on anything ever again.

i would think the black child thing would help him get votes from black people, even if it was bullshit, although most blks vote dem...

Essentially, yes. Through aggressive use of push polling, like the question given above. Push polling is a surprisingly common negative campaign tactic, although this particular incident was particularly notorious for the new levels of noxiousness it stooped to.

You have to put the 2000 SC race into perspective as well: McCain's defeat there was the beginning of the end of McCain's insurgent campaign against George W. Bush. For McCain to score victory here is all the sweeter.

There was a guy on Colbert recently he very briefly mentioned that someone was push-polling in SC to make McCain out to be a traitor to the US. It obviously failed, but I hadn't heard anything other than what that guy said.

Don't give up hope yet, I think it more depends on which candidates make it through the primaries. If you get someone like Huckabee, then maybe, but I would think candidates like Obama, McCain, and perhaps a spoiler in Bloomberg would make it a good race with quality candidates.

McCain is all but a no-brainer for me to support as President, and has been for years. I'm not saying he's perfect, for sure--but he is by far the best candidate for President I can remember in the 10 years I've been able to vote (not to mention in this election).

I don't think Bloomberg will enter if it's McCain and either Clinton or Obama. The only plausible way I see him entering the race is if Huckabee miraculously got the GOP nod.
