if a qb could back out of the snap/count because he had to adjust his crotch and not get a delay of game penalty, then it'd be as slow and boring as baseball. 1/20/2008 7:38:47 PM |

a pitch is not eqiuvalent to a football play. each football play is equivalent to contact in baseball. Most of the time it takes 3 or pitches before you get contact. the constant ball strik ball strike foul foul foul foul foul foul foul ball foul foul foul foul foul flyout is why baseball is so boring.
every snap of football 22 guys are involved. theres probably an average of 3.4 guys involved in each baseball play. and a maximum of what 6? 7 8 or 9 on even the craziest plays.
baseball is the only sport where there is always somebody on the field doing absolutely nothing. A guy can go a whole game standing in one spot, and not break a sweat

^^^^ To be fair, it's sixty minutes of action that generally takes three hours.
Baseball is just plain boring. The games last even longer (or at least it seems like it) and there's technically no limit on how long the game can go on. There also seems to be a lot less strategy involved in baseball. Hit the ball, hope it's not caught immediately, and run for the next base before the ball gets there. Repeat for nine innings. Boring.
Football, on the other hand... every play is well thought out, like a move in chess. There's an element of deception (disguising run/pass plays), and additional strategy involved in clock/timeout management.
Even though there are numerous breaks in the action, football seems to flow a lot better and be a much faster paced game.

Football is more popular because of three things:
- Better for gambling. - Better for fantasy sports (easier stats to follow). - The NFL's steroid problem is expected so no one cares.
** Really anyone who has no fucking clue how a sport operates takes a very simplistic view of it. That goes for baseball, football, soccer, golf or anything else.

This brings me to another point. I always laugh when people prefer the "college style of play." That's like preferring to sit down and eat up a fat turd instead of a Filet... How anyone can enjoy watching Coach K and his merry band of future asst coaches (thanks cablinasian) play grabass, slap the floor and flop like they were shot in the neck over watching a team like the Warriors go up and down the court is beyond me...

I think it all ends up being games are more entertaining to watch when you get the fans that are at the game into it. You can have an active game in any sport but if you have no crowd noise it takes away some of the excitement going on. NBA games hardly ever have much crowd noise, you just hear the PA music and the commentators just talking out their ass about whatever crosses their mind. 1/20/2008 8:55:20 PM |

Ok, that's fair. I like college b/c of the atmosphere too... I just can't stand when people use the "style of play" thing... College basketball is really a shitty brand of basketball compared to the athleticism night in and night out in the Association... 1/20/2008 8:56:29 PM |

yeah but you're talking about a league that made the zone defense illegal. it's all about scoring in the Association. they may be athletic, but so are the globetrotters. 1/20/2008 8:57:59 PM |

There is a "style" to the NBA, with the shorter shot clock and no zone defense
There is more talent in the NBA, and less effort.
Fans don't storm the court for NBA games
The NBA has no selection sunday
Nothing like what happened in '83 happens in the NBA
There are tons of new faces around the country every year in NCAA basketball
A lot more development takes place in college

Mine is:
1) MLB 2) NBA 3) NFL 4) CFB 5) CBB ....
But I'll watch anything if it's on and I have time.. but I can watch MLB games with anyone playing every single night...

There are rules in place that increase scoring (i.e. the 24 second shot clock) but they recently allowed zone defense. So scoring the basketball and a faster game obviously isn't the goal of the NBA.
To call the NBA a bastardized version of basketball when it is clearly the highest level of play on the planet (by a longshot) just doesn't make sense to me. 1/21/2008 1:13:24 AM |

in october there was the nba europe live tour, which was an exhibition tour consisting of four nba teams and four european teams. the nba teams were 3-2 against the european competition. so no, the nba isn't clearly the highest level of play on the planet by a longshot.1/21/2008 1:25:36 AM |
