hey evan, have you ever had to insert a chest tube? Of all the things that could happen to me in a Trauma Bay or ER, that is probably my biggest fear.

chest tubes really aren't a big deal.. i mean, in terms of what they do, they are indeed a big deal... but functionally they're very simple

also if you're in a state in which you need a chest tube, you won't care about the pain from that, the pain in your chest and the fact that you can't breathe will greatly overpower that

I'm not worried about someone's ability to insert one....and while I'm sure my lack of breath will trump the pain of a chest tube, the idea of someone cutting open an area between my ribs, and sticking their fingers/tube inside of me all while being awake without pain meds, sounds horrific to me.

supposed to be there at 7:45 for a 9:30 surgery.

"go back in tomorrow to have an aggressive debridement procedure done and they'll check the status of the bone graft (dead, infected, live, etc.) and determine if another one needs to be taken from my other hip or not.

then, wednesday i will have a skin flap completed by a plastic surgeon. taking muscle/skin tissue from the calf muscle and attaching it to the front directly on top of the tibia. the blood supply from where it's taken will remain in place. supposedly this will make it look a little odd (as if it doesn't already), like a piece of meat sitting on top of your leg, lol.

the purpose of this is to replace the tissue that's already been removed in past procedures as well as the large amount that will be cut out tomorrow. in addition to this, the new tissue will provide increased bloodflow to the tibia and surrounding areas. this should help with the infection for several reasons.

these will be surgery numbers 13 and 14. "

evan, clearly I'm not suggesting death would be better...and luckily I wouldn't have a say in the matter but much like people fear waking up in the middle of surgery, I see getting a chest tube inserted along those same lines.

thanks....highly appreciated.

also, intubation is one of those things that looks brutal when it's done...I mean it just looks like things are being cut and shit while it's on it's way down

yeah, anesthesia doesn't really bother me much. i'm wide awake/ready to go as soon as i'm rolled into recovery. the pain is being managed by a steady diet of a dilaudid pca and percocet.

today was my 13th surgery within the past 15 months, so i imagine that probably has something to do with it also.
