the guy was a pretty big idiot for insulting islam when he knows how hardline they are about that. Kinda like how in reality having a lb of marijuana really is not that big of a deal but having such quantity of a naturally growing plant will land me in jail for 20 years. 1/24/2008 1:48:55 PM |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't we eliminated the previous government, replaced it with our own, provided for their entire budget and provided the majority of their policing force? To me that sounds like we own the country. If after all this we don't have enough influence to prevent blatant human rights violations, I think there's been a significant failure.
^Yes, but this isn't some country like Iran where we have no influence. The only reason this Afghani government has any power in the first place is because we allow it to. American taxpayers will sponsor this execution.

Even the Israelites had to get permission from the Romans to execute religious dissenters. I'd like to think we hold ourselves to a slightly higher moral standard than the Romans. 1/24/2008 1:59:08 PM |

I agree with TreeTwista10 here. From a foreign policy standpoint this is actually good for the US as it shows that we are not just meddling in the MidEast setting up puppet governments.
The gov't running Afghanistan should reflect and be supported by the people of that country. If those people want to sit around and tolerate/support a gov't that executes people that insult Islam then that is their own deal.
Until the last few centuries predominantly Christian nations were not much better. 1/24/2008 2:00:30 PM |

we? afghanistan is not we
you're acting like Afghanistan is 100% under control of the United States and we have put in place all of our own policies and cultures
they're a sovereign nation...how is this a bad reflection on the US? how is it a reflection on the US at all??

I don't care what the people there want. I paid big bucks to take possession of that shitty country and I expect results in the forms of cheap oil and enforcing human decency. I think the average pro-war American has similar expectations.
As for the rest of the world, they already hate us thanks to this foreign policy and will continue to hate us until we're completely gone, so fuck 'em.

hey there were some shots fired last night after a high school football game here in charlotte, wheres the outrage that WE could "allow" something like that to happen on our own soil? 1/24/2008 2:07:50 PM |

no we paid big bucks to oust a radical islamic regime that was harboring and supporting the terrorists who were responsible for 9/11. With the taliban out we hoped to allow the people's of Afghanistan to elect a new gov't that would provide more stability and more respectful of human rights.
I have always found a sense of irony in the term "pro-war" btw. What does it mean to be "pro-war" does this mean you like killing people and conquering land just for the sake of raging war. I think Ghangis Khan was "pro-war". When you are "pro-war" do you fight for a purpose or just the thrill. I guess it is kinda like when i want to play halo and kill people online; except when you are "pro-war" you just want to mobilze real life forces to wage war and play empire.
Without the sarcasm I doubt many soldiers or even high up politicians are "pro-war". They may be "pro Iraq", "pro neo-imperalism", "pro strong defense" but I am sure anyone that has to fight on the front lines or is responsible for making such decisions enjoy war in effect to being "pro" to warfare.

I don't know what each person's motivation is, but I know a large majority of Americans were "for the war" a few years ago. I assume they expected we'd get something out of it, like an investment, be it world security, oil, general sense of well being, yada yada yada. I think it's fair to call anyone who was "for the war", including anyone that voted "for the war", pro-war. Don't get hung up on some "support the troops" semantics bullshit.
^The land is invaluable for oil pipelines.
Oh and of course I'm trolling, that's the only reason I've ever posted on TWW. I enjoy arguing. I don't really care about any of this shit. I'll also take debating tips. For instance, where did I go wrong in this argument?

Then why hasn't anyone even planned on building a pipeline in the nearly 7 years since the fall of the Taliban? The Taliban wanted the Unocal pipeline built in the 1990s as it would have been a great source of revenue for them. It would have been more practical to build one prior to 9/11 when there was some semblance of stability in the country.

why does being a republican mean you must be a tool for whatever bullshit rhetoric your leaders spew out. I do not see why a staunch christian conservative could not be socially conservative, free market capitalist, traditional values, support Bush's tax cuts, fly their USA #1 flags, yet be angry about the debacle aka Iraq1/24/2008 4:48:01 PM |

I'm not angry about Iraq because I simply don't care enough about Iraq...is the Iraq War doing much to affect my ability to get up and go to work in the morning, work all day, get home, take a shit, play some 360, get some dinner, go home, go to sleep? No so I don't let that of all things stress me out. My job and bills and women and shit give me plenty of stress as it is 1/24/2008 4:50:04 PM |
