Anyone gone to or going to the Blade Runner Final Cut on 35mm at the Carolina Theater? I think I'm going this weekend, it's only there for one more week since there are two prints that are going to select cities. 1/24/2008 3:47:24 PM |

i heard there is like 7 minutes of new footage or something. I haven't seen it in a long time, so it'll be new to me for the most part. Plus it's on 35mm, which is a reason alone to see it, not to mention it's at the Carolina Theater so the crowd will be other film geeks who appreciate it instead of the 14 year olds at South Point or the Grand finger banging eachother. 1/24/2008 9:41:08 PM |

its really more than two. in all honesty the film is very very loosely based on the novel. a lot of the big thematic elements of the book and details about characters etc are changed to things that dont have as much of an impact or meaning in the story of the film.
i love the film and the book, but the book's story is much more complete and well written.
i know the film (havent seen any director's cut) doesnt let you know whether he is andy or a human whereas the book convinced me he was human.
both the Penfield Mood Organ and the empathy box were interesting in the book thematically and never appear in the film.
same with mercerism. mercerism was a HUGE theme in the book too.
lots of other things too.2/1/2008 8:08:49 AM |

awesome nerd debate here, but I'm interested in how the book convinced you into thinking Deker is a human. By the end of the movie this past time, I had at least two solid leads that convinced me he's a replicant, with a few more reasons that are a little shaky.
First, the scene where he and Rachel are in his apartment and he's washing up after the fight where Rachel saves him, for a second, when he walks past her in the dark, his pupils have the same glow that the replicant's have.
Second, and most importantly, I wish I could say this was my theory, but it's not, though I totally buy into it. At the end when Deker picks up the unicorn origami that Gaff leaves, this says two things to me. One, Gaff was at his apartment, and let Rachel live, though he knew she was a replicant. Two, Gaff left a unicorn because that was his way of telling Deker that he was a replicant, Gaff read his file, because Deker had a dream about a unicorn. This parallels how Deker convinces Rachel that she is a replicant when he talks about the spider outside of her window, he knows her memories because they are a part of her program. Gaff knows about Deker's unicorn dream because it's a part of his program.
My weaker proof is Deker's ability to climb at the end with broken fingers, could a human do that? Maybe, that's why this is pretty weak.
Deker never replies when Rachel asks if he's taken the test.
Gaff seems to be disabled or wounded, and is always around after a hit has been made. I think maybe Deker is Gaff's replicant/slave that he uses as his tool, I think Gaff is the real blade runner.
I'd love to hear some feedback on this and see why anyone would argue that he is a human. This movie is great because it leaves everything so open for interpretation. 2/1/2008 12:31:43 PM |

dont have much time to debate here at work. and this could be a spoiler, but heck the books been out for 40+ years so too bad
In the book, Deckard takes and passes the Voigt-Kampff test. So take that as you will. Could mean the test is inaccurate. And the last time I read it was about 2 years ago. 2/1/2008 12:54:13 PM |

^^ There's also a unicorn in J.F. Sebastian's workshop.
^ I haven't read the book, and I probably will some day, but it seems to me that it's an entirely better story if Deckard doesn't know whether he is a replicant. It takes away so much of it to say "Yeah brah, I took the test, totally aced it." Or something. 2/1/2008 1:00:34 PM |

right, and its not really as clear cut as that. There are definitely things that leave him wondering still. I just kind of always felt it answered the question for me. But maybe he KNEW how to pass it since he had administered it so often. 2/1/2008 1:03:11 PM |

oh, i don't want, nor think there is a definitive answer to if he is or isn't, that's why this movie is so great. i just like to hear all the reasons for and against it, it gives the movie viewings all that much more to look into.
i'm gonna pick up the book soon. 2/1/2008 3:43:19 PM |
