my prof doesnt seem to be able to actually teach physics, as i havent a clue whats going on in there, so i looked for another open class & couldnt find one that would fit in my schedule, so im going to sit in on a different physics class and stop going to mine in hopes of this new prof being better at getting the ideas across
anyone else tried this move before? 1/25/2008 4:06:13 PM |

maybe you don't know how to learn physics?
are you reading the book before you go to class, or was your first reaction to blame the professor? 1/25/2008 4:16:09 PM |

read chapter 1 before the first class, and have, like i do in all classes, try to stay ahead of the class
but the type of questions on the webassigns arent like the ones in the book and without any real assistance in the class it leads to a lot of stress just doing webassigns 1/25/2008 4:19:40 PM |

I've thought of this a few times before. As long as they don't take attendance it shouldn't be a problem.
I would also make sure to go to your "real" class the day before a test, and stay in contact with a classmate in your "real" class for updates.
^ try forming a study group, talking to the TA, office hours, isn't there a Physics tutorial center ?

^yeh, didnt have much of a problem with the first webassign though, so i have a orientation for getting a physics tutor monday morning, as well as setting aside time monday to go to the tutorial center
and if there is a TA for the class, he has yet to be mentioned in the class on or on the syllabus 1/25/2008 4:28:24 PM |

Talk to the professor of the other section. You're allowed to change sections with permission after the add/drop deadline . 1/25/2008 6:08:35 PM |

i always wondered if you could do this as well
like say there is a bus class in nelson 3400(the giant fucking room that some people have like 10 classes in like me) that seems really interesting to me, and i have nothing better to do in life....i would think you could just sit there and take the class without doing anything 1/25/2008 6:15:51 PM |

I've sat in on classes before that were in a large lecture hall without being formally registered, but I don't make it a regular part of my schedule by any means. Its kind of a good way to get a feel for a class if you are considering taking it in the future. 1/25/2008 10:44:05 PM |

Tutorial center is a good idea. One-on-one instruction and going over problems with you is a good way to learn. Plus, students tend to be able to explain things differently than professors. Maybe it's because they're not so far into the theory as to have forgotten what struggling with the basic teaser physics is like. 1/25/2008 11:12:20 PM |

I did this for my physics class. Now this was back in 2002 or so, so I don't know if its changed or anything. But I stayed enrolled in my actual physics class and went to another class (not all the time, but a good portion of the time) to actually figure out what was going on.

I've gone to multiple sections of the same course for supplemental instruction (I just learned better from the other professor's style... they were both good).
If you go through with it, definitely go atleast the days before tests. You could also speak with your professor. The physics professors I had were always willing to make changes based on class feedback. 1/27/2008 11:43:29 PM |

It depends on which physics it is. Some of the freshmen and sophmore classes test at the same time with the same tests. if this is the case, it shouldnt be an issue. However, if they do different testing, I wouldnt do it. The professor could give test clues, stress on certain points ect...that could put you at a disadvantage.
What is BS is when you had a situation like I did. We had the same tests as other classes (tested at the same time and everything), but other classes curved, and my professor didnt. I did better on every test than my roomate but he got a better grade overall. It made me sick! 1/28/2008 11:48:35 AM |

^ that is pretty shitty. What can you do? Huge government institution, lack of oversight, supposed standardization, and then you still get crapped on. GG University System. 1/28/2008 1:31:45 PM |
