I've gotten some good advice on here, and I'm back for more

My girlfriend is coming down to visit in March and I want to take her to see the Outer Banks. I'm looking for a place to stay for a couple of nights. I'd like to stay near Hatteras for a night, check out the southern OBX, and then spend a night in the northern part, like Duck. Ocracoke is pretty much out of the question since they're doing that bridge restoration project (NC12 is detoured onto the beach and I don't have 4-wheel drive).

There's alot of lodging choices in the OBX. Can anyone recommend a good place for us to stay based on their past experience?

Appreciate it!

I've done fine this time of year by just picking the hotel with the best rate on their sign and asking if they have a AAA discount. I went to Hatteras in January of last year and got a room with two full beds for $45. I think it was the Holiday Inn, but I'm not sure.

In South Nags Head, try the First Colony Inn. Its like staying in one of the historic beach front cottages (but modern), good service and its reasonably priced if I remember correctly. Otherwise its the no-tell motel. Up north you have the Sanderling but its $$$

There's no where to stay in corolla except the hampton inn. Duck has no hotels, so you'd have to go down to kitty hawk. There's a couple options there, and it depends on whether or not you want a "normal" hotel or an older "beach" hotel.

normal hotels are just that, normal. very similar to what you'd get staying at a hotel anywhere else. "beach" hotels are usually older, ground level, no breakfast, no extras like internet or premium channels on the tv, things like that.

there isn't shit to do on the outer banks in the winter.

its cold & windy so you can't go to the beach

I went to the Brewing Station & Kelly's (two popular bars) Friday night and there was no one there. at all. They had DJs and bands but no one to dance and enjoy it.

I would recommend waiting a couple months, unless you like the peace and quiet.

my husband and i did an outer banks trip in feb last year. it was indeed very cold while we were there but we managed to have a good time anyways. lots of places are closed during the winter but we had no trouble just finding a place and stopping for the night and still finding a good price on the hotel rooms. if you find a place to stay ahead of time make sure to call and see if they are open or not. oh, and there really aren't a lot of places to stay up near duck, but it's really not that far from kitty hawk.

most of the lighthouses aren't open to climbing this time of year, but you can still visit. jockey's ridge is open though and my husband and i did go hang gliding (and it was just us and the instructor so we got some extra flights just for fun since no one else was there). the beach is nice too because no one is there. we found lots of good shells (but mostly on ocracoke).

i don't even remember the name of the place. we just found something each day while we were there. we stayed at a few different places as we traveled but the one we stayed at the most i think it was a day's inn. it looked like an old log cabin (didn't look great on the outside) but was actually quite nice inside and had a full continental breakfast (including waffles). it was near nags head i believe and along the road on the beach.
sorry i can't be more specific.
