For what it was at the time, it's hard to look at Civ 2 NOT being the best product of the series. That being said, I thought Civ III was far more "newer" than Civ IV when you compare them to their respective previous entries.
With all THAT being said, Civ IV: Beyond the Sword has so much new things added to the gameplay that it is for sure the definitive version of Civ IV and probably the best of them all.

i still need to get beyond the sword.
civ 2 was great. i still wish they would bring back that system of civil wars. if a capital was sacked or more than half the cities were in revolt then there was like a 10% chance it split into 2 civs half and half.the missile system was also great. you could wage a war with just submarines and cruise missiles. then send helicopters and paratroopsers.mech inf was too dominant AND WHY CAN'T BATTLESHIPS ATTACK CITIES ANYMORE??????????????????????????????? 1/25/2008 10:21:37 PM |

colonization was fun but simply put it was too fucking hard. plus you didn't really get to do what you wanted. yes, I understand it was kind of like being a colony--no, exactly like being a colony--but goddamn. I didn't play games to be subjugated. 1/26/2008 11:35:41 AM |

2 was the pinnacle.
1 was awesome because chariots ruled and the troops marching into a city animation ALWAYS got my blood pumped.
What pisses me off is that they toned down the Civil war probability that could strike if you took a capital city. That had made things interesting. 1/26/2008 8:47:44 PM |

I loved all the player-created scenarios for Civ II. It was a sad day for me when my Gold Edition CD cracked. 1/27/2008 1:13:47 AM |

does civ4 have a single playing "campaign", or do you just play on randomly generated maps all the time? 1/27/2008 8:47:15 AM |

Here is my order on the games by how much time I spent on each:
1. Colonization 2. Civ 4 3. Civ 2 4. Alpha Centauri 5. Civ 3
I swear that I learned more from the Civ series than from any other game I have ever played. I studied the different leaders, and fucking Colonization teaches you about the different Founding Fathers, so that later on in school when we talked about these characters, I knew generally what they were famous for when most folks never even had a clue what their names were.
I still play Colonization on the regular (I throw it on my thumb drive and if I'm in a classroom bored working on a PC, ANY fucking thing can run Colonization) and take a few turns. I want to see two Colonization things. First a new game with Civ 4 style 3-D graphics, and a port of Colonization for a Pocket PC system, so I can play it on my phone.
Also you can download the original game from:

I'm a little too young to have played 2, but I've wasted a lot of time on 3 and 4. Also dabbled in Alpha Centauri a little bit. It was kinda fun but I never really played it a whole lot. I liked the technology tree better. 1/27/2008 10:50:57 PM |
