I just picked up a 1979 CJ7 (inline 6) in SC. I'll have her home tomorrow. The body is in amazing shape (little/no rust), and she cranked up. She's not getting gas to the engine, so there are a few kinks to work out. Pics to come tomorrow.

I'm going to restore it some, but mainly will use it for duck hunting and to pull a boat to local lakes for fishing. Of course, if a large mud pit happens to be in my way, I'll have to go through it.

I'm sure I'll have few questions for some of you as I go through this thing, so thanks in advance for any input.

^^^^yeah, those are damn nice street/mild offroad tires. people get some crazy mileage out of them too. my dad is about to put a set on his truck.

^^wat? are you trying to say cruisers suck as much off road as thornbirds?

^he's talking about the overhead bars that run from the A pillar to the B pillar on your cage. they're called spreaders. yours are technically pushed in a little too far. they need to be moved out and a third one added in the middle. or, you could just add two more at the outsides. a dash bar and a diagonal or X behind the seats would be helpful also to add some triangulation and lateral strength.

if you plan on really 4 wheeling it at all, i would definitely get that done. otherwise, it'll probably just collapse or fold over in the event of a flop/roll. it's not really neccessary if it's going to stay on flat terrain (mud/sand) or the street mostly, but still wouldn't be a bad idea just in case.

It's not the first time a thread has been jacked on TWW.
I started working on her last night:
replaced fuel pump, fuel filter (#1), pcv valve, removed old air filter and sanded down housing (replacing with K&N), removed shitty fender flares and cracked side lights.

Tonight I'm finishing up the air filter housing and rebuilding the carb. I've never rebuilt a carb before, and would be more than willing to provide all the beer you can drink if anyone wants to come "oversee" the operation. Any takers?

CJs are my fav. we've been through quite a few. had an 83 cj7. 2-3 cj5's (with my uncle). who currently has two, one is rebuilt, the other is on its way.

Alright, the carb's rebuilt. I can get the engine running, but it won't idle. If I keep giving it gas, it'll stay running, but dies if you let off the gas. I am assuming I need to work with the carb adjustments. Can anybody here help me out?

My dad and I restored a late '86 CJ a few years back. Hell of a process, but worth it in the end. Satisfying driving something you rebuilt.

We adjusted the timing screw/knob to adjust our idle. May depend on the type of carb. you've got. Worst case drive it over to 4wd Hardware off Glenwood Ave, and find a mechanic and slip him a $20.

Carb is done and she's running great! Now time for the interior...I've stripped everything out of the interior (seats, old carpet, POS speakers, etc), sanded all the interior surfaces (except for the dash-it's fine), taken care of any rust or pinholes, acetoned and vacuumed everything inside, and will be rolling "Herculiner" truck bedliner on the interior tonight. It's gonna look (and perform) great.

Where's the cheapest place to get replacement seat? JC Whitney?

Also, recommendations for shocks? It's got a 2" lift on it (suspension).

yeah, jc whitney is probably the cheapest for seats.

shock brand isn't a big deal unless you care about something nice. all of the major off road companies source most of their basic shocks from the same manufacturer so it doesn't matter. just head over to 4 wheel parts and see who's they can give you the best deal on. they can probably hook you up with their house brand (pro comp) fairly cheap.
