Hey guys, I was told yesterday by one of my friends that i needed Physical chemistry. I am a biochem major. I was curious so i went to my Degree audit, but physical chemistry was not underlined.

Please take a look at this...and tell me if my Geology class replaces physical chm. I took geology at a different school. It was 4 credits. I heard Dr. Knopp makes everyone takes physical chm in order to graduate. How is PChm? Is it hard? Who should i take it with. Hopefully i won't have it take it. Inputs please. 1/28/2008 11:09:56 PM |

requirment 5.7- list 3 different sequences. Physical chemistry + elective is required in all but one of the advanced elective sequences. The only other option would be the CHEM PROC THERMO + elective sequence.

Are you going to med school or grad school?
If so, take pchem 1/29/2008 12:14:45 AM |

You heard about it from a friend? Have you not talked to your advisor about this? 1/29/2008 9:53:44 AM |

I would highly advise the CH331 class, unless you know or want to know anything about physical chemistry. The course is NOT easy, and will require massive amounts of reading and work on your own, and even then you may not do well.
The 331 is more of an intro, so it won't go in to depth that much. But unless you are going to grad school for chemistry, I really don't think its necessary to take both the CH431 and CH433 classes as your sequence. 1/29/2008 10:20:26 AM |

Humanlitesho, Yes i heard it from a friend. I saw that all my chemistry classes were done, so i figured i didn't have any chemistry classes left. And my Advisor never mentioned it when i sent him my "Planned classes" during the Fall semester. So yes, this is a suprised to me. He told me that my plan looked good..and for me to be sure that i get my Physic class transfered from another school to ncsu.
I'll be sure to ask him again in person though. It's Dr. Knopp by the way. 1/29/2008 1:13:05 PM |

NCSU Gal, it all depends on what degree audit code you are working off of. Degree audits change year to year but in almost all cases the requirements stated by the degree code you start with are the requirements you end with. So what's currently required now might not be the same as what you are required by the degree audit you are working with. One exception to this would be if a required course is no longer being offered, they might modify the requirement to include a new course. One of my degree audits is dramatically different than the current set of requirements that are used now for newly admitted students but that doesn't mean I have to meet the new requirements.
As for an adviser MAKING you take a certain course to graduate-- that seems like a problem. If you meet the requirements set on your degree audit, one adviser can't arbitrarily decide to add to it to my knowledge.... I would just talk to the dean if that situation came up with me.
Your MEA101 is filling the "Physical" spot so it doesn't look like you need to specifically take PChem. I would disagree that you "need" it if you plan on going to medical school. Medical schools aren't looking for much at the undergraduate level beyond the general AAMC requirements and that information comes to me directly from an admissions committee member at Duke Med.
As was stated earlier, CH331 is your best bet if you'd like to take a PChem. It's an intro-style class which uses only basic calculus (Derivatives and some Integrals) and focuses on more of a life-science approach whereas the main series of PChem I and II are more from an engineering and Chem Major perspective. The person who was differentiating these earlier up may have mistakenly typed a course number because it was a little hard to understand.
Hope this helps! 1/29/2008 2:18:38 PM |

yes, it's true, you need to take PChem to be a BCH major. It has been like that for years now. 1/29/2008 10:01:07 PM |

I just checked the degree audit for the current biochemisty requirements:
Coming from 11BCH036 Degree Code: 07 OPT 040 CH331/ADV.ELECT. OR CH431/433 6.00 Credit Hours
Choices to fulfill requirement: 01 SEQ 041 CH 331/ADVISED ELECTIVE MEA *** MEA ELECTIVE ST *** ST ELECTIVE
Heres the link to the page that describes everything that can fill that OPT040 Requirement https://packtracks.ncsu.edu/scripts/RegRec/ada_dgsl.pl?degree_key=11BCH%20%202036%20&crs_key=OPT%20%20040&title=BIOCHEMISTRY&curr=BS&crs_title=CH331/ADV.ELECT.%20OR%20CH431/433&
So in answer to your question-- you have fulfilled the OPT040 Requirement which would have been PChem but instead was filled by your ST*** Elective and your MEA101/110 Courses. Congrats!! No PChem for you!

^ haha your link contradicts your answer, it says you have to take either 315, 331, 437 along with another advised elective 1/30/2008 1:34:39 PM |

Look at the fall semester senior year.
You have to take PChem... either 431/433 two semester deal, or CH 331 + an advised elective (i.e. your MEA/ST class).
Yes, it's hard. But we're biochem majors, that's how it goes. 1/30/2008 1:49:54 PM |

^^ Then the degree audit is programmed wrong because its accepting two advised electives instead of CH331 + 1 Advised elective. But degree audits are often messed up this way.
I was told that CH331 isn't bad if you did well in CH201. 1/30/2008 3:01:08 PM |

Thank you EVERYONE for replying. I guess i have to take BCH 455 and Pchm Fall 08. My degree Key is: 11BCH 036 Then it's graduation!![/b]. I also have a 2nd major listed that i was not aware of until a semester ago. 11SDM 036. Who would you advised me to take it with? Is taking it over the summer a good idea? Thank you. 1/31/2008 11:05:55 AM |

HGTran: You're in Pharmacy school at UNC right? How is that going by the way? What year are you ? Are there a lot of vietnamese students in your class? I have a friend name Kim Tan (an old guy), he's doing his P1 at UNC. 1/31/2008 11:09:09 AM |

Taking it over the summer may not be a bad idea, if its your only class and you will actually do the work.
There's not very many good options as who to take it with. The material is hard, regardless.

I took Ch 331 over the summer with Warren and it was a good class and interesting material. I liked that I was able to focus only on Pchem during that time instead of while i was taking biochem, etc. 1/31/2008 7:34:15 PM |
