Marvel Comics Revives Capt. America
Quote : | "LOS ANGELES (AP) — It turns out you can't keep a good man down — or even dead and buried — when he wears a red, white and blue uniform and calls himself Captain America. Marvel Comics, which killed off the veteran superhero almost a year ago, brought him back to life Wednesday — sort of.
Captain America's alter-ego, Steve Rogers, is still resting in peace at Arlington National Cemetery, having been done in by assassins last March. But his good buddy and sidekick from the 1940s, Bucky Barnes, has picked up the bulletproof Captain America shield, put on a new uniform and taken his place." |

^^^ and ^ Both would have been/could be very interesting storylines, no doubt. I would likely gravitate more toward the zombie Cap. Punisher is too much at odds with other superheroes--I mean, Spider-Man and Daredevil put him in jail if I remember correctly, didn't they?
Besides, superheroes these days need superpowers--except for Batman. And he compensates with his various gadgets, his lair, and his world-class ability as a detective. 2/1/2008 2:25:19 PM |

This is by far not the worst they could have done. They could have done much worse by using magic, technobabble, or some other pulled-from-ass phlebotinum to resurrect the previous Captain America. This is just another guy donning the uniform, which could be interesting in and of itself. It will at least generate inter-character drama as people who knew and fought along side Captain America will see this one as an imposter, not like his interpretation of the role, etc. And the new Captain America will have to grow into his new role and earn the respect of those around him.
Now will the writers do any of this? Probably not, Marvel seems to be missing lots of golden opportunities as of late. And in all likelihood, somebody probably will revive Steve Rogers, making all of this bullshit moot anyway. 2/1/2008 2:57:24 PM |

It actually was worse then that - to my knowledge (I just skimmed Civil War) he was shot by the sniper, then shot several times point blank by an agent of Shield who had been brain washed. I believe the agent was also his girlfriend and pregnant with his child... 2/2/2008 8:52:45 AM |

It could be much worse, they could have revived Cap's WWII-era sidekick through technobabble (thanks to dead-means-dead Quesada), killed off Cap for a sad publicity stunt, and then had him take over as Cap.
Oh, wait...

Well, yeah. But remember, this is the comic book world we're talking about. Bucky was put in suspended animation by the evil Russians (back when they were evil) and stayed that way for the better part of 60 years." |

And guns. WTF. Hell, I remember when Captain America resigned because he shot and killed one of Flag Smasher's goons during a hostage crisis. He had absolutely no other choice but to shoot the guy, but the guilt from having done it pushed him over the edge. That was way back when U.S. Agent started being trained by Taskmaster. 2/5/2008 10:23:02 PM |

^^ Um. . .it's actually closer to the character's origin. As a "super-soldier" in the 1940s, Captain America was a part of the war effort and was issued a side arm--I mean, those Nazis weren't going to just lay down for him. 2/6/2008 2:21:43 AM |

lol so he was 90 when he died last year? he was in great shape
here's the description of the original captain america from wiki
Quote : | "The United States government, making the most of its one super-soldier, re-imagines him as a superhero who serves as both a counter-intelligence agent and a propaganda symbol to counter Nazi Germany's head of terrorist operations, the Red Skull. To that end, Rogers is given a uniform modeled after the American flag (based on Rogers's own sketches) a bulletproof shield, a personal side arm, and the codename Captain America." |

I'm not saying it's not possible, just that I've never seen it. Of course, my knowledge of Captain America lore only goes back to about the early 80's. If he did have a gun, when did he stop using it? And why'd he change his mind about it? I could definitely believe that these changes would have simply been retconned. Oh, and another question - when did he start using the round vibranium shield? 2/6/2008 2:00:12 PM |

Hell, a lot of superheroes used guns before, well, everything became so wussified.
And I think The Spirit did, too, among others.

I definitely remember the Phantom having guns. Twin .45's, I think. And the Lone Ranger and Dick Tracy certainly used them extensively. It's just so strange to me that I have no memory of Captain America ever having used one... I guess I've always just been under the impression that he was completely anti-gun. 2/7/2008 9:07:26 AM |

^ Well, it was before either of our times. But still, it's kind of hard for a soldier--super or otherwise--to be anti-gun. 2/7/2008 11:24:50 AM |

FYI.
Report: Captain America will live again
Quote : | "Two years after Marvel Comics knocked off its famous star-spangled superhero, Captain America is returning better than ever, the New York Daily News reported.
'The original Captain America is finally coming back,' Marvel Comics editor in chief Joe Quesada told the Daily News. 'We've been patiently planning for this moment for two and a half years.'
Captain America will return next month in a five-comic book series, 'Captain America Reborn.'
Captain America was gunned down on the steps of a courthouse 68 years after creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby introduced Steve Rogers—a scrawny kid who is injected with a 'Super Soldier' serum to fight the Nazis—to an adoring fan base, the newspaper reported.
There's still no word about how creators plan to bring Captain America back to life.
Marvel is planning to a feature-film adaptation, The First Avenger: Captain America, for July 22, 2011." |
