Kinda from Chit Chat, but I want the really smart people to chime in. Its from http://www.speedtest.net
So, I'm running Win XP, 2.1 ghz processor with 1 gig RAM (old, I know). I have RR Standard and am on a wired connection straight from my Linksys router. This is what my speed test came up as:
Should I call RoadRunner and be like WTF? Seemed everyone in Chit Chat had 4k download at home...
HELL, I dont even know what RR standard is supposed to average. 2/2/2008 2:58:16 AM |

yes. there's something fucked up.
try directly connecting your cable modem to your computer and run the test again.
also, go here: http://192.168.100.1/ and click on Signal Levels (i think that's what it's called, i forget...)
let us know what your SNR and upstream/downstream power levels are.
159ms ping times are unacceptable. you're paying for 5mbps down/384kbps up, and you're not getting anywhere close to that.
give us that info, and we'll tell you what to say to time warner to get them to fix it. 2/2/2008 3:10:42 AM |

try selecting a different test server...for whatever reason, i ran the test on their "recommended" server from NCSU was getting absolutely abysmal numbers...i changed it to LA or SD or wherever on the west coast and the numbers jumped big time
i tried the next day on their recommended server and it was back to "reasonable" levels 2/2/2008 9:24:03 AM |

From Evan's post...
Signal to Noise Ratio 35 dB Power Level -9 dBmV (down) Power Level 48 dBmV (up)
If I had the slightest of clues what that meant, it would be swell. 2/2/2008 1:05:09 PM |

your downstream stuff looks fine...
is this without the router in between? like with just your modem hooked up to your computer?
next step:
start > run > type cmd > click OK
tracert google.com
let us know the results... this will determine where in the routing path that it's slowing down 2/2/2008 5:38:57 PM |

Can you elaborate on why a tracert to google would identify any throughput or latency issues with a random server in Frederick, MD?2/3/2008 1:07:44 AM |

because i was assuming that the problem was with every site he browses to
not just the speed test
otherwise the speed test would not have ever been done 2/3/2008 1:15:27 AM |

The problem ended up being a very region specific one. Not sure why, but servers in GA and IL were extremely difficult to connect to with any real bandwidth for TWC customers in the carolinas last night. 2/3/2008 1:16:54 AM |

okay, so my parents are finally getting off dial-up and making the (very tiny) step up to EVDO for their computer (they don't have any other options but satellite)
yesterday i hooked it up and then went to http://www.speedtest.net/ to give them an idea of the difference between dial-up and EVDO...oddly, i got results like this (down/up):
dial-up: 48/394 EVDO: 296/192
upload on dial-up being almost 400kbps? i checked out http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and got nearly the same results, regardless of server (obviously, there were minute differences)
ping numbers were awful, ranging from 130ms to timing out at 999ms...am i missing something?

And been getting steadily worse over the last couple days... Yes I've reset the modem (replaced it 2 days ago too.) This doesn't change even if its just one machine connected directly to the cable modem.2/14/2008 4:46:39 AM |
