...didn't see a thread on it. I am sure the Dems will win even though Easley is out but how come there is not much conversation going on about this?

The debates on both sides have been less than stimulating. In any event, I'm calling the win for Bev Perdue right now.

Cause everyone including the Republican Party knows the Democrat will win.

How do you figure the dems have fucked this state up? We've managed to attract many bright people, keep our school systems good and our universities excellent, all from being a primarily agricultural and textiles state full of semiliterate racists. Every day I wake up and thank God we didn't turn out like South Carolina, or even Virginia. And I have to think that's owed at least partly to them.

^^ Are you saying that Democrats at the local level--city and county--have messed up the state or that Democrats at the actual state level have?

You know, I really think you're in the wrong party.

North Carolina could be so much more if we would get the monkey that is state government off our back. I moved from north east liberal state to here and my state taxes went UP.

I'd be happy to move to SC, the property taxes are way lower than here. Oh, but then I would cry because then I wouldn't have the erudite pleasure of begging my masters at the school board for my child to go to school when and how I want.

I like the people of NC for the most part, what drives me nuts is just because mommy and daddy were democrats folks still vote democrat. Nevermind that the democrat party has shifted from being a party which was worth supporting to one which supports every manner of reprobate activity from sloth to abortion. Party loyality ftl.

You sound like a communist. You want the government to force people to work, and you want to control a woman's body. I bet you want them to mandate your religion of choice as well in an effort to stem off opposing religion of choice.

You know what really forces people to work? Their desire to eat, have clothing, and shelter.

I'm surprised that the guy that wanted to halt the increases to the gas tax isn't running on the "remember me from the gas add?" platform.

I've never personally thought my state taxes were bad.

The state Republicans are a bunch of corrupt weasels and f***ing idiots that only know how to win against liberals. We'd be better off if they were actually competitive in statewide races, but instead they reward nepotism and good ole boy politics. Anyone that's ever seen or knows about county-level Republican politics will nod their head, look down, and agree. That exists in all parties I know, but for some reason it's worse for the NC GOP.

The reason Bush can take 57% is because the national Democrats are liberals. How many candidates for governor from the Democrats would be called liberal on the national stage? Easley wouldn't, Hunt wouldn't, Perdue or Moore wouldn't. The North Carolina Democratic Party are smart enough that they take the votes of liberals and blacks, but are smart enough to ensure they'll never get nominated in a primary. Take someone with the political views of Kerry or Mondale or Dukakis and stick him with the NC Democratic Party. How many North Carolina Democrats would vote for them? As election results show, not many.

Republicans don't make up a majority of this state in NC politics, never have, just cause the circumstances that allow the Republicans to win this state in presidential politics do not exist for governor (they do for senator mainly, I think part of that is it is a federal election, while a governor can just "do his own thing" in contrast).

2004:
G.W. Bush (Rep) 56.0%, Kerry (Dem) 43.6%, Badnarik (Lib) 0.4%
Easley (Dem) 55.6%, Ballantine (Rep) 42.9%, Howe (Lib) 1.5%

12% of the state voted for Bush and then Easley. So 21% of Bush voters voted for Easley.

2000:
G.W. Bush (Rep) 56.0%, Gore (Dem) 43.2%, Browne (Lib) 0.4%, Buchanan (Ref) 0.3%
Easley (Dem) 52.0%, Vinroot (Rep) 46.3%, Howe (Lib) 1.5%, Schell (Ref) 0.3%

9% of the state voted for Bush and then Easley. So 16% of Bush voters voted for Easley.

1996:
Dole (Rep) 48.7%, Clinton (Dem) 44.0%, Perot (Ref) 6.7%, Browne (Lib) 0.4%, Other 0.2%
Hunt (Dem) 56.0%, Hayes (Rep) 42.8%, Yost (Lib) 0.7%, Van Witt (NL) 0.6%

At a minimum, 6% of the state voted for Dole and then Hunt. More likely number of around 10%. That equates to a range of between 12% and 21% of Dole voters voted for Hunt.

1992:
G.H.W. Bush (Rep) 43.4%, Clinton (Dem) 42.7%, Perot (Indy) 13.7%, Other 0.2%
Hunt (Dem) 52.7%, Gardner (Rep) 43.2%, McLaughlin (Lib) 4.1%

Hard to determine the number of floor-crossers due to Perot's presence, but Bush still outperformed the Republican nominee for governor despite another major candidate in his race that he lost votes to in Perot.

North Carolina is actually one the lowest tax states, and has been cited among the lowest 5 for business. This is primarily because we have relatively low property taxes. This is even more true when you factor in the low assesments on rural and suburban land.

I just saw a commercial for Richard Moore followed shortly by one for Beverly Perdue which made me think about this thread.

Moore's commercial said basically said Raleigh does things wrong. Beverly Perdue talked what issues she is about. If I had to go off those alone, I like hers better. She also seems to have the most qualifying experience of those that I know are running.

Quote :
"Perdue, a Democrat, served in the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1986 to 1990, and in the North Carolina Senate from 1990 to 2000. During her last three terms in the Senate, she served as one of the state's chief budget writers and was the first woman to hold this position. While she was in office, the General Assembly increased teacher pay and passed Governor Hunt's Excellent Schools Act and Smart Start. Additionally she led the debate that created North Carolina's Clean Water Management Trust Fund."

The only Perdue commercial that I've seen is the one where she hugs this little black kid at the very end. I guess her ad agency doesn't know that you're supposed to put stuff like that happening in the background. That way the message is subliminal and you don't have people like me seeing right through what they are trying to do.

I saw one tonight of her showing her support of the military and their installations/bases in Eastern NC.

She's from my hometown of New Bern. Eastern North Carolina represent!

Well, Perdue as Easley's Lieutenant Governor is pretty much the candidate of the establishment that's been running the state. Moore is running more as an outsider to that you would think then.

Smith has been heavily criticized by the Democratic Party, including criticisms from Jerry Meek, as being an absentee Senator, because Smith missed over 300 votes in 2007, which is over a quarter of all possible voting opportunities.

See the funny thing is that you assume that because I said that the dems support activities such as "sloth" that means that I want the government to force people to work. Implicit within your thinking is the thought that if I want something to be done then it must be through the government, as if there is no other way. In other words, you're the communist.

I wouldn't force people to work. I would take away the safety net for people who can work. How and where they work is their own business.

Abortion I'll grant you. But, I believe that a primary function of government is to enforce laws which protect the innocent. This in no way contradicts my general belief that government should be downsized to its constitutionally delimited core. The core of government is to protect life. It is not to create party aggrandizing entitlement programs that discourage self reliance and encourage sloth. That is what I meant. Obviously I don't want the government to force non-felons to work.

I don't know....I really like what McCrory has to say and I am sure he would have the majority in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.....Also people are feed up with Easley and most will assume that Perdue is like Easley.

Also that free Community College is a load of shit....fuck that. Most people that go to community college are the high school fuckups that couldn't cut it in real school. Does that mean people like us NCSU students should not come here and start at some shitty CC???

lot of CC people might have fucked up, but then wanted to get their shit together and go back to school and cant get in a big university

still some others might not have had the HS grades, they could get a couple semesters of good grades at a CC, then transfer with a solid GPA on their transcript

still others couldnt afford "real" college (^)

Maps of Primary Results:

First, the Democrats. Red is Bev Perdue, Blue is Richard Moore. Darker shade equals bigger win. Lighter shade equals smaller win.

The Republicans. Blue is Pat McCrory, Red is Fred Smith. The lone yellow county is Yancey County going for Bob Orr. The pink and light blue counties mean less than 50%.

So basically the people between I-95 and I-85 voted for McCrory.....the outside parts of that are usually considered the "backwood" parts of the state.

I really like what McCrory has to say....he got the NASCAR HOF for Charlotte, started the Metro light rail system, and Charlotte crime has gone down in the last few years.

^^ So you're an elitist.

The North Carolina Republican Party has always been very factional based on geography. Take a look at the 2004 gubernatorial primary.

Red is Richard Vinroot, blue is Patrick Ballantine, green is Bill Cobey.
