Quote :
"The movie will be adapted and directed by Miller, with Odd Lot Entertainment’s Deborah Del Prete and Gigi Pritzker co-financing and producing. Also producing is Batfilm Productions' Michael Uslan. Batfilm's co-founder, Benjamin Melniker, will executive produce along with Steven Maier. Odd Lot's Linda McDonough and Batfilm's F.J. DeSanto will co-produce.

Uslan said Miller was the ideal choice for the project. 'What makes Frank's involvement with "The Spirit" particularly poignant was his special relationship with Will Eisner, captured in the book Eisner/Miller,' he said. 'You have two of the medium's greatest storytellers of sequential art and cinematic comics discussing the compelling and controversial art form.'

'I intend to be extremely faithful to the heart and soul of the material, but it won't be nostalgic. It will be much scarier than people expect,' Miller told Variety.

Shooting commenced in October, 2007 for January 16, 2009 release."

I'm really looking forward to this. For me it's "The Spirit" and "Punisher: War Zone" this December. I don't think I've ever been so excited to see two movies in December before.

I was not aware that Sin City was ruined. How did making it mostly shot for shot ruin it?

From the trailer it looks like it's in the same style as Sin City, maybe a bit more surreal. I'm excited to see it.

Don't count on it. Screenplay by Frank Miller.

It would be different if he put his name on something, got paid, and was never allowed near it.

So I've talked to a whole buttload of people who are absolutely flummoxed by the trailer for The Spirit. Does anyone know anything about the comics? What's the deal with the hypersexualized presentation?

the spirit had a ton of femme fatales and so far that's what they seem to be playing up because boobies put horndogs in seats

some of the women in the spirit were some of the earliest empowered female characters in the genre

i'm sure miller will make sure to reduce them all to whores as his more recent work suggests

he seems to have gone ultra sour in the past couple years (maybe due to his divorce to lynn varley...who knows) and borders on woman-hating

Frank Miller does beautiful work in stills, and utilizes all the opportunities afforded him by the comic format to the fullest extent possible. His work in graphic novels is brilliant.

But he's not a filmmaker.

As such, the Sin City film feels very stilted. In theory, going shot-for-shot from the visually stunning book is a great idea, but the way the book translates motion and action doesn't quite work in film, and it shows. The scenes without a lot of action or motion, the slow, brooding scenes of thought and dialogue, are great. The scenes where action is depicted with the same flourishes that made the comic feel alive make the film feel dead. The only fast-moving scene in the film with any vitality is the one that wasn't directed by Rodriguez and Miller.

I grew up reading my dad's copies of "The Spirit". This does not feel anything like it.

I saw the teaser and got my hopes up. Just saw the theatrical trailer and all I can think is "Sin City". Graphics look awesome, but I also never read "Sin City".

This is a different case; and I feel let down.

I *really* hope you aren't refering to the Tarantino scene with the guy talking to the dead body in the car. That was the worst scene in the entire movie.

^ That's precisely the one I was referring to, and it's the only one that feels like a film instead of an exercise in style.

Basically says that the acting is horrendous outside of Eva Mendes and that while it's not Frank Miller's fault that he has no business directing a film, he still has no business directing a film (which, incidentally, is what I said earlier).

Which means that they think so little of the movie-going public that they’ll drop this bomb on us and just expect us to go see it “‘cause it looks like Sin City.” "

When I first saw previews for this, I got it confused with The Shadow. Unfortunately there will be no clouding of men's minds, so I probably won't be seeing it.

An actual AICN contributor, rather than a reader, has a similar response today:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39470

Anyway, I know I'm not the only one to say that Frank Miller has no business directing a film, but I thought Sin City was mostly a bore because the idea of going shot-for-shot from a static medium to a moving one is fundamentally flawed and everyone yelled at me...so I'm chirping more about this.

I just saw this movie. I really loved it. There is such variety in it that made me fall in love with it minute by minute. A lot of REALLY good looking women and Gabriel Macht is a stone cold fox.
Scarlett Johansson actually did a phenomenal job in it. She got a chance to break away from her regular whiny lifeless character.

I would recommend you going to see it.

That seals it, I'm going tomorrow...only because this kind of divisiveness (every critic I've seen calls it hands-down the worst performance of her career) is definitely worth eight bucks.
