I think we're going to win the World Series, I really do
- Ryan Dempster

Pretty Gavin Grantish of him. That motherfucker probably jinxed the entire season, but is it possible this is the year to break the 100 year curse?

The cubs will be looking to build on the success they found last year finally making a post season appearance since the 2003 season. The cubs won 85 games last year, and I think if they can push this number into the 90s in the regular season then I think they get past the divisional series in the playoffs and who really knows from there.

GO CUBBIES!

The Cubs will probably be worse than the Brewers, but they're the Brewers so they could screw it up just like the Cubs can. Maybe the Astros will win the central.. but for now I'd say the Brewers have to be the best team in the central

We need better middle infielders. Not sure if the Brian Roberts thing is going to happen. Kerry Wood at closer? I would rather have Marmol do it.

Thank you for starting the 2008 thread. I was going to wait until the first split-squad game.

GO CUBS GO!

^ Marmol deserves it after last year, but I'll be interested to see what Wood can do with a full spring training.

The Cubs really wanted to move Matt Murton in the off season, and the Roberts trade was their best bet, but Andy McPhail really loves Roberts, and wouldn't let him go. From everything I have read, the deal isn't dead yet, but it does not have a very strong pulse. Plus I think Pinella is happy with Derosa at second. It looks like Marmol, Wood, and Bob Howry are battling it out this spring to see who is going to be the closer. Marmol looked unhittable many times last year, and I have to think he is the frontrunner for the job, but it will be interesting to see what a healthy Kerry Wood can do.

whoever wins the closer role, marmol or wood, the other will be the set-up man so i think the late inning pitching will be strong.

Fuk-u-do-me

The Cubs have a chance at the division if Lee and Soriano can return to their AllStar forms.

4-1 .. watched the earlier innings when we scored a couple runs, they looked pretty solid for this early.

interesting rotation - not sure what to make of dempster but i'm hoping for the best

i'd love to get off to a nice start this year - we really should be able to cruise along in the division if we stay healthy and some of the stars return to form

I like the RLRLR rotation. And that Lieber will be in the 'pen for any early exits (or as insurance for any injuries). I hope Wood does well and can stay healthy

Bump for the last game of Spring Training!
Cubs up 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th, though Seattle has runners on the corners and no outs a runner at third and two outs.

I am not that much of a baseball fan but I have always considered the Cubs my team ever since playing as the cubs in the little leagues when I was younger. I have always wanted to go to Chicago, so I could see a game at Wrigley Park.

Big Z gets his first W. Nice to see Soriano get his first homer, as well. I love how Yahoo Fantasy Sports was telling me that Derrek Lee might not be good until next month. 6-for-7 this weekend with two home runs.

First road trip of the year: Pittsburgh and Philadelphia this week. Go Cubs go!

I scheduled a vacation to D.C. back in January/February and finally got around to see who the Nats/O's were playing and was surprised to see the Cubs on the schedule for the Nats. This will be the first time in 14 years I've gotten to see them live.

http://chicagoist.com/2008/04/18/offensive_fukud.php

Quote :
"Racism and baseball have a long and entwined history, and this season there's a new chapter thanks to some Kosuke Fukudome t-shirts.

On the front of the shirt is the traditional Cubs cartoon bear face but with slanted eyes and wearing oversized Harry Caray-style glasses. It's accompanied by the words ''Horry Kow,'' scrawled in cartoonish ''Japanese'' script. Fukudome's name and number are on the back.

Fukudome said through an interpreter that "if I make a big deal out of it, it's not going to benefit me, so I'm not going to make a big deal of it.''

The shirts are really popular, according to the article, and the vendor who's selling them says he doesn't think the shirts are offensive. [S-T]"
