It aint just Rainier...what people dont realize or remember is that Rainier isnt the only volcano. Baker, Hood, Glacier, Adams, and St. Helens are all still active and as likely to pop.
If you look at a map you can see that should some one-in-a-trillion cataclysmic eruption occur, the entire western 1/3 of Washington state could likely be done with.2/26/2008 2:33:19 PM |

It's odd watching your favorite football team at 10:00 am on Sunday play..... the West Coast is not good for my church habits because of this.
Honestly I hate this area. I like the sun, and it rains almost all the time here. Yes, the summers are pretty awesome, but 9 months of shitty weather do not make up for 3 months of awesome weather. I have noted a noticeable drop in my morale and eagerness to get out and do things since I started living here. I really miss the East Coast. 3/10/2008 1:13:20 AM |

So Seattle is one of the places I've been considering in my job search, and I received a call this afternoon from a Seattle-based firm that has an upcoming opening in their Tacoma office (North End).
The problem is, I know nothing about Tacoma. From 10 minutes of research I've gathered that it's a pretty nice place with a lower cost of living, and about 40 minutes driving time from downtown Seattle. I'm especially looking for general info on things like parks, restaurants, bars, outdoor-type activities, where I'd want to live, and so on. I don't expect to find all this info here, but any personal experience is appreciated. Looks like the regional bus from Tacoma to Seattle is $3, which is cool.
I've by no means secured the job, of course...I'd just like a little preliminary info on the city before I begin talking to them.

How familiar are you guys with hotels in the downtown area? We've been looking hard at the Inn at the Market http://www.innatthemarket.com/ comments? yeah, i've had a pretty good time here over the last year, but i'm ready to leave. if nothing else, the weather is fucking terrible. i mean, it was like 53 degrees today.
also--and this is specific to Whidbey Island (especially Oak Harbor)--I have never seen a place with so many cops. It's almost impossible to drive here without getting constantly hassled and/or ticketed. I've been pulled over 13 times and ticketed thrice in the year that I've lived here. It's so bad that I wouldn't live here just because of that.
it's a beautiful area, and i enjoyed skiing through the winter (though it rains almost every day for the better part of the year). the SCUBA diving is pretty good, except that the water is fucking frigid. I'm glad I've seen the northwest now, but y'all can keep this place. I'm out in another month or a little more, and I can't say that it'll be a sad day. 6/8/2008 5:32:19 AM |

i don't live in seattle and i'm not sure what part of town you'll be staying/working in, but when i was there last fall i ate at the belltown bistro and it was great, i highly recommend the crab mac and cheese
also in the same neighborhood is black bottle, a wine bar/tapas-type place that i enjoyed -- probably better with friends or a small group of people (as opposed to dining alone)
and a place to avoid -- pyramid brewery/restaurant (over by the stadiums), i'm not crazy about their beers to begin with but the food wasn't good at all (just bar food, burgers and stuff, and still bad) 6/27/2008 11:28:45 AM |

Quote : | " Bullets fly downtown after police corner robbery suspect
By Jennifer Sullivan and Christine Clarridge
Seattle Times staff reporters
When Douglas Cox's mother saw a TV report Tuesday about a bank robbery and wild police chase in Seattle, she said to herself, "Oh dear, I hope it isn't him. He's been doing so good."
But the Idaho woman's fears were confirmed when she learned that her son -- barely three weeks out of federal prison -- not only was suspected in the bank robbery but also was shot and wounded by police at the end of a chase that stretched from West Seattle to Capitol Hill to downtown Seattle.
Cox, 50, was wounded in the neck as he sat in an SUV during a dramatic standoff on Spring Street after heavily armed officers surrounded the vehicle believed to have been involved in the robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank branch a short time earlier.
Despite repeated warnings to surrender, police say, Cox displayed a handgun, prompting two Seattle police officers and one King County sheriff's deputy to pump numerous gunshots into the Jeep Cherokee.
Cox was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening. It wasn't immediately known how many times he had been shot.
One bystander suffered minor injuries when he was sprayed with glass while seated in a nearby vehicle. The man declined medical aid, police said.
A second suspect, identified as Kevin Palmer, 43, had been arrested earlier after he jumped out of the Cherokee at Eighth Avenue and Yesler Way, said FBI Special Agent Robbie Burroughs.
The chase through downtown Seattle and the shooting were witnessed by scores of office workers and shoppers, many of whom were unnerved by the gunfire and the heavy police response.
The shooting culminated a wild morning that began with the robbery of the Wells Fargo branch in the 2300 block of California Avenue Southwest in West Seattle just minutes earlier, said Burroughs.
Burroughs said that at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday, the men drove the Cherokee to the bank. Cox -- dressed all in black and wearing sunglasses and a long, brown woman's wig, with black shoe polish smeared across his cheeks and chin -- walked into the bank carrying a plastic garbage bag and armed with a handgun, Burroughs said.
Once inside the bank, Cox waved the handgun, hopped behind the tellers gate and ordered employees to empty their cash drawers and put money into his black garbage bag, Burroughs said.
Tellers gave Cox an undisclosed amount of cash as well as two red dye packs, Burroughs said. She said Cox did not threaten bank customers.
Harold Chacon, a clerk at a Chevron station across the street from the bank, said he saw a man leave the bank and climb into the Cherokee.
As it drove off a moment later, Chacon saw a red cloud coming from the Jeep, apparently from one of the dye packs exploding.
Burroughs later confirmed that at least one of the dye packs exploded.
She said Palmer was behind the wheel of the Cherokee as it drove away from the bank. At some point, officers began following the SUV. Several times during the pursuit officers used their patrol-car loudspeakers to order the driver to pull over.
The order was ignored.
The driver led police on a chase from West Seattle, heading east on the West Seattle Bridge and then north on Interstate 5.
The SUV exited I-5 and headed to First Hill, where Palmer, who had been driving, bailed out at Eighth Avenue and Yesler Way, Burroughs said.
Palmer was quickly arrested, but Cox hopped behind the wheel and drove west toward downtown, police said. Police continued to trail the Jeep, still ordering the vehicle to pull over.
Witnesses said that once the Cherokee reached First Avenue and Spring Street, more than a dozen officers surrounded the SUV with weapons drawn. The officers ordered Cox to surrender and he raised his hands, but held a handgun in one hand. Two Seattle police officers and a sheriff's deputy opened fire, authorities said.
None of the officers were identified by their departments.
Cox did not fire at the officers, police said.
Much of the encounter was captured by Seattle television news crews flying overhead in helicopters. At least one showed police dragging the wounded man from the SUV.
The chase and barrage of gunfire also were witnessed by dozens of downtown office workers.
Jim Rulf was in an office building at First and Spring when he looked outside and saw at least 10 police cars and several motorcycle officers surround the beige Jeep Cherokee.
"You could see the policemen in firing positions and you could hear the shots," Rulf said.
Fearing stray gunshots, Rulf told everyone in his office to hit the floor.
Felicia Holland, 17, was seated in her car finishing her morning coffee when she saw the Jeep drive by with seven police cars on its tail. She said people were running from the scene and a group of toddlers was being hurried into a nearby nail salon for safety.
"I was kind of creeped out," Holland said.
Cox and Palmer both have criminal records.
Cox, whose last known address was in Colville, Stevens County, was convicted of bank robbery in Spokane in 1998 and sentenced to nearly four years in prison.
In 2002, he robbed two more banks, one in Kenmore and one in Fife. He was sentenced to seven years in federal prison, and was just released June 6, according to the federal Bureau of Prisons.
It's that history that made his mother fear he might be involved in the bank heist when she saw the TV report from her Lewiston, Idaho, home.
Cox's mother, who did not want to be named, said she was glad that her son was alive, but she doesn't plan to see him.
"To be honest with you, I think I've come to a place where I have to wash my hands," she said, tearfully.
Her son had never been in any kind of trouble, she said, until about 10 years ago when his father died, his wife left him and he started drinking heavily, she said.
"It's been downhill ever since," she said.
Palmer, whose criminal history includes convictions for theft, possession of stolen property, cocaine possession and bank fraud, was questioned by Seattle police for much of Tuesday and was expected to be booked into jail Tuesday night.
The FBI's Burroughs said Tuesday's bank robbery was the 74th in the state since January. During the same period last year there were 86, Burroughs said.
Washington state has historically had among the most bank robberies in the nation, reaching an all-time high of 357 in 1998, the FBI said.
However, the numbers have declined in recent years, and in 2007 the state's total -- 176 -- was the lowest in 20 years.
