Sharpsburg, N.C. — A Sharpsburg police officer resigned over the weekend in the midst of controversy involving a traffic stop of a school bus.
Officer Travis Parker stopped a Southern Nash High School bus Feb. 22 after, he said, one of the students aboard the bus was making faces and obscene gestures at him.
According to his police report, Parker said his intentions were to put the student in his car and lecture him about respect. But as he was pulling the student off the bus, others began shouting at him.
Two other students were also removed from the bus. One, Dessie Lewis, 18, was charged.
But Lewis and her brother, Derrick Lewis, 15, claim Parker stopped the bus for no reason, that no one made obscene gestures at him and that he got on the bus and started bullying the students around.
Sharpsburg Police Chief B. C. Bissett said the matter is still under investigation, including whether the stop was legal. 3/3/2008 2:42:54 PM |

Since when is giving a cop the bird legal reason to stop a vehicle?
The fact that the cop resigned tells me that even he knows that he fucked up in monumental fashion and is praying that he won't get charged with assaulting a minor or something similar.3/3/2008 3:04:02 PM |

I saw the film from my elementary school bus cameras.. the school admitted they only had one camera that got switched around but they did have one and used it
I dunno, I guess they didn't though or it would have been a key source of evidence, obviously. 3/3/2008 4:54:56 PM |

Quote : | "Sharpsburg, N.C. — A Sharpsburg police officer who resigned over the weekend in the midst of controversy involving a school-bus traffic stop had no probable cause to do so.
That's according to Police Chief Barry S. Bissette, who said Monday an internal investigation found Officer Travis Parker did not follow proper procedure when he stopped the bus on Feb. 22. It was transporting students from Southern Nash High School..
Bissette said Parker pulled the bus over after a student made faces and an obscene gesture at him. Parker's intention was to remove the student from the bus and lecture him about respect and manners, Bissette said.
As he put the first student in the front seat of his patrol car, Parker said others on the bus started yelling and using profanity. He said he decided to go back on the bus and remove two other students.
One of those students, Dessie Lewis, 18, was charged with disturbing the peace. Bissette said Monday that charge would be dropped.
"I feel, personally, that Officer Parker had good intentions in mind," Bissette said.
Lewis and her brother, Derrick Lewis, 15 – he was also removed from the bus – claim Parker stopped the bus for no reason, got on the bus and started bullying students around.
"When the bus driver asked him what's going on, he just pointed to his gun and didn't say nothing," Dessie Lewis said.
Her father said he was furious about what happened, saying Parker was wrong to do what he did.
"You don't stop a bus and open the back door up and snatch no kid out of there," he said.
The bus driver also resigned, citing stress from the incident. Students on the bus were sent to talk with a school counselor about it." |

Partially because that's expected, and an assumed part of the job description. And when disciplinary action is taken (and sometimes even when threatened), parents are notified. 3/4/2008 1:42:24 PM |

Not just the flipping off
you can also curse at a police officer as long as you do not threaten him or do it in a public place that causes a scene.
so if you get pulled over, you can say almost anything to him/her. 3/4/2008 2:02:46 PM |

So
Despite the fact that cops - deal with more verbal abuse and violent people than most other people in society, and so (in theory) are less perturbed by such behavior - have training to appropriately deal with a situation if it should escalate, and keep themselves safe - know at hiring that, uh, disrespect is a real possibility (never mind that ANY job puts you at risk for being disrespected ) - aren't harmed by being flipped off/cussed out
We need to protect them? I'm down with protecting folks from real harm, especially if it's something that's not their fault. If you say that, yes, we should 'protect' cops from being cussed out and flipped off...why only cops? Since it's so harmful that we must protect LEOs from it, why don't we protect every citizen from it?
If a cop does suffer an emotional injury from being cussed at/flipped off, they have no business being in the field. Everyone isn't suited to work in every possible field, nor is anyone entitled to work in a field, just because they choose to. If you can't handle the job, don't take it.
