Meh, walk up to a Catholic chauvinist on the 17th of March wearing an orange tie and see what happens. Most Americans are too ignorant to get the implications, but an Irishman might just trhow a drunken punch.

what in the hell?
Well, last Saturday was Hoboken's St. Patrick's day celebration. All the bars are packed with ppl wearing green (people line up outside at 11am). House parties are everywhere. Hell, they even have a parade through the middle of town.
I think this is done so they're not overshadowed by Manhattan on the actual St. Pat's day. 3/7/2008 6:43:38 PM

The reason the Irish flag has green, white, and orange is because the green represents the Catholics, the orange the Protestants, and the white is the (hoped for) peace between the two.
Wearing of orange on St. Patrick's day is a Protestant or Royalist's way of saying "fuck you" to a Catholic nationalist.
My friend John was working in sales one year and his family has a tradition of always wearing orange. Upon spotting his tie, Ms. O'Irishwoman (I don't remember what he said her real name was) started visibly shaking and got in his face SCREAMING about how he didn't know what it meant etc. etc. Someone tried to smooth the situation over by saying, "hey, hey, hey, everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day" to which he responded, "so what, is everyone black on MLK Day?" Ms. O'Irish wasn't laughing. ![](images/beatup.gif) 3/7/2008 6:52:27 PM

My town does this on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day so it doesn't conflict with the NYC parade. People want to be able to go to both.
It's the best time -- one of my favorite days , but I can't make it this year.

Oh, it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen. My father, he was Orange and me mother, she was green.
My father was an Ulster man, proud Protestant was he. My mother was a Catholic girl. From county Cork was she. They were married in two churches, lived happily enough, Until the day that I was born. Then, things got rather tough.
Oh, it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen. My father, he was Orange and me mother, she was green.
Baptized by Father Reilly, I was rushed away by car, To be made a little Orangeman, my father's shining star. I was christened "David Anthony," but still, inspite of that, To my father, I was William, while my mother called me Pat.

With Mother every Sunday, to Mass I'd proudly stroll. Then after that, the Orange lodge would try to save my soul. For both sides tried to claim me, but i was smart because I'd play the flute or play the harp, depending where I was.

One day my Ma's relations came round to visit me. Just as my father's kinfolk were all sitting down to tea. We tried to smooth things over, but they all began to fight. And me, being strictly neutral, I bashed everyone in sight.
Oh, it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen. My father, he was Orange and me mother, she was green.
My parents never could agree about my type of school. My learning was all done at home, that's why I'm such a fool. They've both passed on, God rest 'em, but left me caught between That awful color problem of the Orange and the Green.

no so much, but it pretty much blew my color coordination theory out of the water when i saw that the gay guy wasn't in on it.
but i mean he wears normal clothes, its not like he rocks a pink scarf on tv. so i would wear what he wears, sure.
