Wouldn't campus alerts be more useful if they actually gave a more detailed description of the criminal including ethnicity.
A man 6' wearing dark clothing is not very descriptive. Of course if they said 6' african american male we would have the NAACP crying that campus police is being racist and just trying to alienate minorities. 3/11/2008 7:46:59 AM |

^^ I think she's talking about how often we're receiving messages like these... it happened to one of my sorority sisters a few years back when she was leaving the library. It's just the type of thing that you wish didn't happen so frequently around campus. But really, what more can you do other than remember an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of a cure. (I.E. - Walk in pairs/groups, be aware of your surroundings, etc.)

Repeal the law making it illegal to carry on campuses and aggressively publicize the fact that students with the proper training and permits can now carry their guns to classes, the library, computer labs, or wherever else they want to feel safe. Armed robbery won't happen nearly as much. Attempted armed robbery might go up a little as a result, but I think I could handle that.

^ Ditto.
I can imagine they wanted to have more details before putting 30,000+ people on alert, but dang, if this had been a year ago I would have been heading to my car on Centennial campus right about that time. I would have liked to know ahead of time that I should be aware of something like that...
I'd rather they be over-zealous in protecting my safety, rather than waiting too long to announce something. Point being, if the suspects weren't in custody, we should have all been on alert. Not known about it via email after 7pm.
Note: I had a friend IM me about it at 5pm b/c she got the alert from WRAL.com. Check out the blog and how many students were asking for details there. Seems like social networking is the true winning medium for notifying folks of incidents to be aware of!

There's a lot going on around here. This girl I work with, she was on spring break in Mexico, she lives by campus, her house was broken into by a handyman her landlord hired, and her roommate's car and her car were stolen, as well as all of her school books and notebooks and stuff. Her car they think was sold for drug money, her roommate's was found with them smoking ounces of pot in it. NC should rethink its policies about concealed carry, I think. I'm feeling a lot less safe by the day. 3/11/2008 10:30:15 PM |

I wonder how much the cops actually patrol and use the camera systems in place in the area if somebody can get robbed in broad daylight AND the perpetrators can get away.
Gay little crimes of opportunity, but hey at least they aren't killing their victims. They point a gun at you, you lose whatever you've got in your wallet, you tell the cops who don't give a flying fuck, and you go buy a gun about a month later and CAN'T WAIT to use it on somebody. 3/12/2008 3:07:06 AM |

I dunno why they would have any fear of campus police. You hardly ever see the guys at all. The cops I see most often are the horse cops chilling outside of Talley. I rarely see any others.
Actually I did see one cop who used to stop by the Bookstore a lot to say hey to us, kinda wandered by every couple weeks or so.
I should see a cop more often than that, though. I thought that was the whole point of patrols, lulz. 3/12/2008 3:15:52 AM |

Yeah, I meant "increased" since all the shit yesterday. But before that I never saw many cops unless they were trying to give somebody a seatbelt or speeding ticket.
And before some cop tries to school me, I realize that the probable cause of a seatbelt or speeding or some other violation gives the cops the right to check people out and potentially stop some bad guys. Save it.

Wake Forrest has caught on and is buying up all the land around the staduim and Baity St. (couple of bars, fast food chains and homeless hangouts between campus and the stadium/LJVM) in order to build student appts and nice areas (shopping, food etc..) I was mad at first that the bars would be gone (Ziggys, chrome and Freddie B), but realized they will open up somewhere else. Some retarded % of students mugged happen in this area.

Why do I think TDub had something to do with this story, lol. Love it. I think WolfAlert should have been utilized irregardless of whether the so called suspects were "running away from campus". That makes no difference. A lot of State students live in the areas surrounding both Centennial and Main campus' so I fail to see how this wouldn't have helped students.

ehh, i don't know. I kinda feel like a robbery like that is an isolated incident (as far as whether there would be any immediate threat after the initial attack). I mean the dude probably isn't trying to get caught. I think that it's important that we don't overuse this system to avoid desensitizing ourselves to potential threats.

OK, that's my point. I drive to and from campus and live right next to Centennial Campus. I walk around north and central campus a good amount, and I rarely RARELY if ever see cops. If there's an event going on like a sports game or something I might see some. Once or twice a month I might see a cruiser rolling down a road. I never see foot patrols near where all the students are at all, I never see them patrolling along hillsborough street on foot or on a bike. Cops are always just riding quickly through areas where I'm at and never actually patrolling something proper. Sure it's great that they're in cars and they can get to locations quickly. I still think foot patrols would provide a much stronger image of police presence and campus safety (or at least a bicycle patrol). It might keep non-students and sketchy people farther away from campus if they decide to go near campus and see campus cops walking in two's in areas around campus.
I dunno, it's just an idea. I have heard about all these robberies and I rarely see campus cops. I almost always only see cops in an area after something bad has happened and, to me, that is a bad thing.
As for the campus alert system being used for the robberies, I think that would've made good sense. It would've made good sense for both robberies since one was near a dense residential area and the other was in the busy corporate campus in the area. Hell after they issued the warning (maybe with an initial description of the perpetrators) maybe somebody would've been looking around and seen somebody fitting the description trying to get out of the area. It's kind of police state-tastic, but if they're going to build the system they may as bloody well use it.3/13/2008 1:12:25 AM |
