It's never going down. Housing's never going back up. It's Armageddon. Put paper bags on your heads and lie down on the floor.

Where was that picture taken?

It's only ~$3.19 around Raleigh.

And really, gas prices increasing like they have isn't all that surprising... they spent 10+ years with virtually no adjustment for inflation, and this past decade the industry suddenly decided to raise prices to compensate for the declining value of the dollar. Americans were just spoiled through the 80s and most of the 90s... after all, our prices are still much lower than most/all of Europe.

[Edited on March 12, 2008 at 1:44 AM. Reason : v Case in point... that price is absurdly low.]

^haha, you say only $3.19, if gas goes down to $2 we're all gonna celebrate, thats sad, i remember gas when it was $0.69 in like '97

My initial guess would be west coast, since they historically have much higher gas prices than the east coast.

1. A lot of us don't even give a shit (we'll pay)
2. Living in the U.S. requires using a lot of gas
3. OPEC won't baby us with production increases
4. Entitlement to drive an SUV if you're an American
5. More daylight and summertime approaching
6. Prices have been under-inflated for two decades
7. Hasn't been a new refinery built in America in 3 decades
8. Capitalism on a global scale has increased demand in most countries (China, Russia, India, et.)
9. Speculators

These are not in order, but some reasons.

I hate it when people use this argument. In Europe, you have alternatives to driving. If something isn't within walking distance, public transportation can take you anywhere you need to go. Unless you live in a big city here in America, you can't do anything like that.

i would love to ride my bike to work. it's almost a mile (something like 0.96mi) one way...but i have to go down a very busy street and one major intersection with a bunch of morons and i'm afraid i'd be killed. there aren't any sidewalks to escape to. and no back route.

we're still fighting.

and no it's never going to come back down unless there are more refineries built and there is more oil in the pipeline that comes from a cheaper source, i.e. not OPEC.

we will drive, but we will drive less

i haven't been anywhere unnecessary or on any "drives" in a long time

the number of roadtrips will decrease

my roommate has already stopped going out for lunch or coming home for lunch (just brings lunch with him now)

and spending more on gas will get us to spend it less at other places, ie: bars, movies, retail, etc...

good for shell/mobile/exxon/etc, bad for everyone else

huh, they have the 2nd biggest reserves in the world, yo
i know haliburton and some others are down there but what are they doing
why are we still beggin opec to raise production

the sad thing is after all this time and sacrifice a democrat will be president and they'll pull out of iraq and we'll leave empty handed, thanks alot bush

on the bright side, these high gas prices do encourage alternative energy sources to be developed.

there was a show on the history channel the other day about oil dependence. they talked a lot about ethanol and how if it became widely popular how it would put a huge strain on our food supplies, which i've always said but GM doesn't listen to me. making hydrogen takes a lot of energy to make so we burn more coal. solar and wind seem to be the least intrusive, yet least effective energy sources (with current technology).

basically we're fucked.

remember, it's not just cars using oil. it's power plants that are eating a large chunk of oil

all we need is nuclear power plants and we are set.

you fucks that continue to buy suv's and trucks are the problem

you probably consume 80% of the automotive oil in the country but there's only 30% of you on the road.

thats the honest to god reason why prices are so high. your high usage is killing

Only because the European nations tax the hell out of gas and that tax money is used to better public transportation. Big difference between gas being taxed for the greater good of your country versus gas going up in price.
