I enjoy playing pool & darts but it's hard to come across a place where you can play pool and not suffer in a stagnant cloud of smoke all night. I'm looking for something similar to Champions in Mission Valley, minus the feeling that you just smoked 2 packs of cigarettes. Anywhere in Cary or Raleigh would be good, as long as it's not too far from NCSU.
Thanks. 3/22/2008 11:29:57 AM |

Green Jay...I'm looking for a bar type place, I think I'm too old to be hanging around the dorms
vinylbandit...maybe you're a smoker yourself, or you're used to the smoke, but at Champions the ceilings are really low and there's no ventilation...so to non-smokers it's pretty bad, almost to the point where my eyes start watering 3/22/2008 3:27:46 PM |

I smoke (not a lot, but some), and even I have a hard time dealing with the smoke clouds at some bars (Champions, the Goat, even some restaurants...). I understand how a nonsmoker could get annoyed. I hate coming home and smelling like I smoked a pack when I didn't. 3/22/2008 4:59:26 PM |

several pool halls have smoke free pool leagues around here. snookers (at wade & faircloth) has smoke free nights on tuesdays and thursdays, and brown's billiards (on atlantic springs drive across from the movie theater, probably farther than you want to go) is starting one on mondays soon.
it is very nice to be able to come home without a splitting headache from all the smoke.
snookers has darts too, but i think they are only accessible when they have dart leagues (they have to move chairs and close off some tables) and they are on smoking nights from what i can tell.

SOMETIMES the back half of babineaus is non-smoking. that rule is not always enforced, especially when they have poker in the back.

there is a big difference between a drunk asshole and a cloud of smoke. when the guy next to me has a few or even more than a few beers, i don't go home smelling like a beer.
yes i know when i go into a pool hall or other bar to be prepared for smoke, but apparently there is enough interest for two nights a week at a certain pool hall to be smoke free. some people who play those nights smoke but go outside when they feel the need, and nobody complains. 3/22/2008 11:57:15 PM |

Bullshit.
The whole idea about being against mandatory smoking bans is that the market demand would provide better alternatives to please more people. But if you try and silence people demanding this service, which would likely be very successful, then the market breaks down, encouraging the gov. to step in.
So unless you're some type of fascist or far left socialist, then this mountain man can and SHOULD bitch as much as he wants about playing pool without people smoking, and you should be GLAD that he's doing it, because in the long run, it only enhances YOUR freedoms.3/23/2008 12:31:42 AM |

I second going to Snookers on league night. I used to go to Babineaus a lot too but as someone else said, it's kind of iffy whether or not the back is smoke free or not.
It does really suck leaving the place and having your entire body/hair/clothes smell like ass, especially the next morning when I put my coat on and have to deal with it. The worst part was when the smoke starts fucking up my eyes. I can't imagine what it must be like for my buddies that wear contacts 3/23/2008 12:22:33 PM |

anyways, thanks for the suggestions, i'll have to check them out!
last summer they were supposed to open a smoke-free sports bar near NCSU called Tiebreakers...it was going to be right above Bada Wings in Mission Valley, but it never opened and now it's up for lease again...anyone know what happened to it? i was looking forward to it.
i'm confident they'll enact a statewide smoke ban in NC eventually (although NC will probably be one of the last states to go)...maybe the more progressive cities like Raleigh and Charlotte will embrace a city-wide smoking ban before the state goes smoke-free like alot of cities have done in the past (i.e Charleston).

you know, you really ARE too damn stupid to be allowed to post on tdub...i think you should go back to being a druggie, it couldn't POSSIBLY have been worse than this
the dude isn't even really criticizing pool halls or smoking...he specifically wants to go some place that ISN'T chock full of smoke, not starting a protest, you cocksucker
i, for one, am in the same boat...i'm allergic to cigarette smoke (commence the "no way, no one's allergic to smoke blah blah blah rawr rawr rawr" replies), and so i don't go to most pool halls for that reason...it's not like i petition them to stop allowing smoking (because, really, it seems that vast majority of people who visit pool halls are smokers...they'd lose their business)
i used to go there more often, but as of late (as mentioned before), the enforcement has been hit-or-miss, and so they can, apparently, do without my business until they can learn to enforce their own rules
honestly, the ventilation in there is pretty good (it always seems to have fewer smokers in my experience, anyway), and i second (or third or whatever) going on one of the smoke-free nights3/24/2008 8:42:10 AM |

You don't really notice it until you're not around it anymore. I worked at a bar in Wrightsville Beach that had low ceilings and was packed every night and was basically a cloud of smoke. The first two weeks I worked there I came home every night and had a horrible cough. After those first two weeks...no cough. It almost scared me that my lungs got use to it (non-smoker here).
Moved down to Charleston and started working for two bars that were strictly non-smoking (pretty much the only bars in the area like that)...and finally realized the difference, and it was amazing. Could wear the same pants on consecutive nights because they didn't reek of smoke. Didn't have to take a shower every night right when I got home. And no more cough.
Now, pretty much every area in Charleston with the exception of James Island has passed non-smoking bans in bars in restaurants. After the initial public outcry, it seems that even the smokers are loving it. Most bars have outside areas and patios where the smokers can go. Most smokers say that its even made them more social because every time they go outside to light up they are pretty much forced to talk to someone and they end up meeting more people.
Have there been any non-smoking bans passed anywhere in North Carolina?? I feel like its just a foregone conclusion that its going to spread across the country...I just can't figure out the timeline with it. 3/24/2008 9:40:58 AM |

I really think people who smoke or are around smokers a lot do not realize how bad it stinks. I hate having to take a shower when I get home late at night because I can't even lay in my bed because of the smell. 3/24/2008 9:52:45 AM |

Down here people were really worried that the bar industry would take a huge hit when the smoking bans were implemented.
Completely opposite effect. Smokers still came out...I mean seriously...what were they going to do, stay at home and smoke and drink?? But what it did do was get all the people out who were tired of going out and coming home smelling like an ash tray. Business has never been better. 3/25/2008 7:42:51 AM |
