It has sputtered a few times but wont finish turning over. It smells like its flooded, even if I do not touch the gas.

Earlier this morning I was belligerently pissed off and stomped it right when I started it. The other three times I started it after that it was a bastard to get started.

Is there anything that could have stuck when I did that?

push the gas to the floor, the only way to burn that much fuel is with that much oxygen

On some cars (ok, specifically in an old Volvo I once fixed for a family member) when you floor them when trying to start it they actually don't inject any fuel. I agree flooring it is your best option.

Or just waiting a few hours

Are there any switches or dampers that could be hung that would make it keep flooding itself? I have let it sit for like 8 hours in between starts and get the same behavior. I have also tried flooring it while starting and no go.

easiest way to fix a flooded dirtbike is to lay it on its side...try that

srsly tho, plugs are probably wet but it seems odd that you let that shit sit for 8hrs and got the same results

This morning I wiggled all the plug wires and all the connections to the sensors on the air cleaner and it started, sputtered for a second, I gave it some gas, then ran fine.

I think it might have just needed to sit over night.

That's great. You'll get a lot more when you post it on Craigslist and sell it.
Now, sell it before this happens again.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

Tried cranking it last night and got a couple of sputters then it just spins without firing at all. I left for an hour came back and did not even get a sputter.

This morning I did not even get a sputter either.

recap

Car would not start one day and had no fuel pressure. The fuel pump did not make any noise when key was turned on.

After beating on the ring that holds the pump on the tank for a while (trying to get it to turn) I tried to start it and it fired right up.

From what I read online a common problem with them was the connections burning up inside the tank. I pullled out the pump and none of the connections on it look bad so I am guessing the pump motor is going out and thats why beating it around makes it work.

that's textbook for just about any electric pump (or electric motor in general) failure. i'd say at least 75% of the time a well placed whack to the tank or the pump itself will get it going again for at least a little while. bumping the key (power) on/off rapidly will do it sometimes too depending on the exact failure.

true, same with the starter as well, sometimes u can tap that if it won't turn over. As far as the fuel pump goes if you give a good wack on the bottom of the tank the vibrations can do the same thing as Ram ^ said, had that same problem in my pop's Chevy...go figure

Yes any assistance would be helpful plz.

Today I learned that there were two types of fuel pumps that went on a 1997 model year.

One is $199

The other is $499

who wants to guess which one goes on my shit???

no theres only one pump for 97. there is no pump for 200 that will work for you without a couple hundred dollars worth of rigging.

the AB kit is $367

what you need however is the pump, the sealing ring, the fittings, and a new fuel filter. ill sell you all of that for $295. yes it is all factory parts, i got the hookup. HOWEVER no warranty unless I install it, no I dont do side work, so please dont ask.
