What building/buildings would you recommend me to apply for? I'll be a freshman this fall, and I want to decide soon so I can send in my housing application early...
any help would be appreciated 3/25/2008 12:43:27 PM |

I lived in bagwell freshman year which is part of the quad. Back then it wasn't air conditioned, but it did have the biggest rooms on campus. Now that they have renovated the quad I think it has air now, so that would be a good choice. Also, Bragaw was good, not too far from north campus and it is close to fountain dining hall and the gym. So I believe either would be good choices if that is what you are looking for. 3/25/2008 12:46:23 PM |

this is pretty much correct.
i stayed in owen freshman year and it was alright. it's really close to the free expression tunnel, so you can be at most classes in <5 minutes. fountain dining hall isn't that far from it.
i'm staying in turlington now and it's also just alright. it's right beside owen, so it's the same kind of deal where you're close to class.
rooms are gonna be small on central campus, but you're close to class. bigger rooms in bragaw and next door to fountain, but you're a little farther away from class. i'd stay away from lee and the tri-towers because the rooms are tiny. from what i've seen from friends, suite style sucks. i like hall style, myself. you just have to go down the hall to use the bathroom or shower.
dorms are alright freshman and maybe sophomore year, but you'll want to move to an apartment after that. i know i wish i was in an apartment instead this year, but i think it was a good experience living in the dorms at least one year.
PM me if you have any questions about central campus housing or hall style dorms, since that's all i'm really familiar with.3/25/2008 2:01:58 PM |

Carroll rocks. right beside the tunnel, in the middle of everything. decent size rooms. of course you get to pay the premie price for it but i thought it was worth it.

I stayed in Syme for all four years. I enjoyed it b/c the rooms were big, and it was close to my COM classes. They finally put A/C in there about a couple of years ago, but they are still big in comparison to some of the other halls. Plus, I got to eat at Clark instead of Fountain.
I guess the best advice is to get an idea on 1) how far your classes will be as far as your major is concerned, 2) how much you want to pay, and 3) how much stuff you are going to bring. Other than that, keep asking. It won't hurt. 3/25/2008 3:00:27 PM |

but i'm getting a nice bicycle and I plan on getting around that way. and I already have my roommate so we can be pretty efficient about not bringing too much random shit. 3/25/2008 3:03:37 PM |

i thought that only one building in the quad was honors dorms. i know they weren't all honors dorms two years ago.
syme is the best looking part of campus, if that appeals to you, plus you get to eat at clark. i can't speak about the room size or anything.
i lived in metcalf for two years which i liked just fine, and it was ridiculous how close to classes it was. 3/25/2008 3:10:40 PM |

yeah, i think bagwell is the only honors dorm
a couple friends of mine were in berry and i would be shocked if they were in the honors program
im lookin at becton, and so far I like what I see
i just have to choose three, but I might not even get my first three picks hahaha

Our dorms suck, get an apartment from the get go. Apartments are cheaper too.
I think jtbucky was being sarcastic when he said Wood. I lived there freshmen year and it resulted in my immediate evacuation to an apartment the next year. My nutjob roomie probably contributed to that but it also is just too damned far away from everything.
I will say that I've spent nights in both Owen and Sullivan, they're both decent as far as NC State dorms go. 3/25/2008 3:55:52 PM |

I hated Wood, but I do know a few guys who loved it. But if you want to be close to things, don't do it. Tons of house centipedes there too.

Tucker and Owen or the tri-towers if you're more concerned about being meeting new people and being around the action.
Lee and Sullivan are pretty boring and are where all the honors and scholars students are (not to mention they are kind of separated from the other dorms). Same goes with Wood as far as being secluded from everything else.
That's about all I got. If I had to do it all over again, I would have tried to do Tucker/Owen or the tri-towers. 3/25/2008 5:01:54 PM |

i lived in wood hall fall 95 - spring 96
it's probably way different now
the distance isn't as far as it seems...i took design and english classes and it was probably closer to those buildings than say, lee, sullivan or bragaw...i think it just seems far cause you've got the paul DURR track in the middle of the joint
kinda far from a dining hall (unless you eat at case,) but it's close to the gym, talley and mission valley
if you're going to centennial campus (i.e. textiles or some engineering), you're gonna end up taking the bus anyways

Sullivan is good, it's just you won't meet much of anyone there from outside your suite... you'll need to find a circle of friends elsewhere... oddly enough the people I hang out with turned out to live in Sullivan and Bragaw, anyway, so that worked.
Will be moving to Bragaw next year, haven't seen any problems there, people I know enjoy it, and the rooms are a good size. 3/25/2008 9:41:41 PM |

pick a dorm where there will be lots of freshmen, co-ed. i'm not saying don't talk to upper classmen by any means, but when you have a lot of new people away from home for the first time who don't know many people, everyone is forced to come out of their rooms and meet new people. if you move into a dorm with mostly upperclassmen people have already established their closest friends and you get caught up in that. nothing wrong with that, it's just easier to limit yourself in that scenario.
i'll be honest with you, dorm rooms suck. don't worry about picking one with the biggest room. that extra 10 square feet isn't going to make a difference. use your dorm room to keep your shit. don't always study, sleep, or fuck in your dorm room. get out and enjoy yourself.
