yep

never used cars.com to sell, although i've looked there (don't think i've ever found anything to buy there, either)

i've had some luck selling with autotrader, and the other good thing about them is that you pay once and it runs until sold (as long as you keep renewing the ad)

i've also sold one car on eBay (but that's better for oddball, rare, or very highly modified cars)

craigslist is the best, in my opinion, AND it's free.

Try Craigslist, but beware there are 900 people looking for something for nothing for every one serious buyer.

After a week or two there just hit up Autotrader. The dealers on there post everything at ridiculously high prices which means your vehicle posted at a reasonable price looks great by comparison.

As a person who's bought and sold 36 cars/bikes over the last 7 years:

Craigslist is good for common cars, for a local sale as well as a bunch of Nigerian scammers. Pictures on the site are quite limited. Good with buying/selling Volvos, as well as older VWs and the like. Bad for selling anything that's cheap-ish. People try to negotiate down to the last dollar. Usually bad signal/noise ratio. That said, it is free, and takes minimal effort to post.

Cars.com gets decent exposure, tied to local newspapers if you wish. I've found more serious people call from here than anywhere else. Some things you get to specify that are search-able (Lancer -EVOLUTION for example). Good for selling Porsches.

Autotrader gets the most exposure from my experience, best pictures, etc. Good for buying later model mid range cars (Honda/Nissan, etc.)

Message boards aren't horrible either but you get horrible noise ratio. Good for buying later model BMWs and selling earlier Porsches, but not the other way around... It is again free, can be a hassle to deal with.

Ebay is generally not good for a common/appliance car, great for highly modified/rare car, even if you have to list more than once.

If you really want to sell fast and get top dollar, use a combination of cars/autotrader/ebay +message board/craigslist. I usually don't leave a phone # in the ad in any free ad, cuts way down on non-serious inquiries.

I usually send my phone number over email, or call them back if they leave a phone number. My rule of thumb is that if they won't talk on the phone they're probably a worthless piece of human filth. If they try to jew me down over the phone I also immediately write them off.(I don't mind negotiating, but trying to do so sight unseen tells me the person isn't serious.) I never meet anyone anywhere except at my house(I've been stood up way too many times), and even then I choose times when I'll be home anyway. Just this week I had two people tell me they were "headed right over, will be there in 30 minutes" and then somehow disappeared from the face of the earth. And above all, I'll never hold a car for anyone. It's fair game until the cash hits my hand.

So once you cut through all the garbage, craigslist isn't so bad. Just use a long, catchy title, repost it every 48 hours, and keep the price reasonable.

there is no rule. use combination of all.

ive had luck with all of them.
