No Crate, or Fender amps please. Pevaey, Mesa, Marshall and others are fair game though!

I have an early '70s Ampeg VT40 for sale. all tube, baby. Its a clean amp though, not really mesa or marshall like.

i don't need distortion onboard, as i use an effects rig, i just need a LOT of headroom. what do you want for your ampeg? would you consider trades?

eek what kind of distortion effects are you running? even with the best distortion pedals available, the sound is digital and compressed compared to some tube distortion man! if youre really looking to play metal but still want to use an effects board for distortion, which it seems like you do, id pick up an amp with good tube distortion to use along with a pedal.

say a 3 channel mesa or soldano. great clean channel, 2 distortion channels and then the possibility of a distortion pedal on top of both of the 2 separate EQd distortion chanels. You have 4 possible types of distortion to run through plus a separately EQd clean channel.

besides the fact that pedals leave something to be desired, you generally only get to do a full EQ setup for one channel when you are running a pedal, so either your clean is great and your distortion is weak, your distortion is great and your clean is muddy, or both are mediocre.

i used a pedal for a long time myself and thought it sounded great until i really hooked my rig up to some good tube amps and took some time with them. the difference was night and day. just trying to give you something to think about.

just to reiterate i am looking for any used amp head you have that can push a 400 watt rms 4x12
not a book on how my setup sucks, and i should spend tons of money to 'fix' it
i just want to buy an amp

What do you have tww?

^^ i wasnt trying to come off that way AT ALL man. I know you know what you are doing from reading you talk about gear in the past. you dont need to spend tons of money to 'fix' anything. i was just saying that since you are looking for a decent amp, a quality head is going to cost relatively the same whether it has good onboard distortion or not. therefore i dont see a reason for why you would not go for one with good tube distortion.

my whole point was that since youre in the market and they most likely wouldnt be much of a difference in price unless you got a beater to use with a pedal i was just trying to get you to consider a different direction.

im prolly gonna use a vtwin pedal (tube equipped) for distortion at some point but the zoom g2 is working fine for now.

Need a cheap and powerful amp - either a clean only power amp, or an actual head. 100 watts minimum

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/msg/621746119.html

contact that guy about just the amp not the guitar. peavey valvekings are one of the better 'low end' tube heads you will buy. it is cheap but powerful. only like $500 brand new. Since this is used you should be able to get it for cheaper.

http://charlotte.craigslist.org/msg/608586898.html

the second guy is selling a 5150. he is asking 1000 for the head and *2* cabinets. subtract the cost of both cabinets if you could talk him into parting it and you might be able to get a good deal.

ive never played any of the third one i listed. its a peavey for like 300 north of charlotte.
