While it's true that Implicit Association Tests (IAT's) are used to find out whether or not people show biases, generally speaking the simple reaction time isn't enough. The reaction times for many people have to be taken into consideration, as well a statistical analysis run to assess whether or not there is a significant difference, power, to what degree, etc....

but yeah, I've read a few journal articles where they use IAT's to show a few different things.

One of them dealt with interviewer - interviewee biases. It was found that the interviewer usually shows a bias when it comes to black and white interviewees. They measured this by seeing how far away they chose to sit from them when first meeting them.

Another one dealt with stereotypes, and the overcompensation of them

Another dealt with how we unknowingly treat people that are sick (as in illnesses that will kill you).

seriously, could they maybe not have chosen the shittiest pictures ever? i think the test showed nothing about racism, and more about are you quicker at successfully determining if a person is armed or not armed. i was much quicker when i was sure that someone was holding a gun.

I just went through it again to get a good look at the people. A good portion of the of the black people are dressed like "thugs" while a large portion of the white people are dressed in "business casual" clothing. I think it would have been more effective to hfiave everyone wearing the same thing, or a few different outfits.

Your reaction time is always going to be a little bit slow between armed/unarmed just due to your hand dominance and the nature of the task. In other words, for me, because my left hand is the one on the "holster" button, it's always going to take a little bit longer to process and hit that key, so my time for the unarmed guys was longer.
Hmm, so what if we did a similar task, but asked people their handed preference? Interesting idea for a perceptual study.
