got a ticket in va couple months ago. it was 20 over, tried to take care of it but the judge didnt give me any leniency. i was found guilty on friday. i have to pay the fine in the next few days, and because it was 20 over it will be reported to NC dmv and i'll get a suspended license for being more than 15mph over.

i have a business trip to va again in mid-may, and i know that the suspension will last a month. has anyone had this happen before? wondering when NC will find out about it, because i would like to do a rental car on my two-week stay in va, and they wont rent me a car if my license is suspended.

im going to call the dmvs as well, but thought i'd ask around. best case scenario is it takes them longer than a month to find out about my ticket and suspend my license. worst case is that they suspend it immediately as of my paying the fine.

call NC DMV and VA DMV and ask about reporting times

also ask about your business trip and if you can file for an exception during the time you'll be gone

you dont have to give them your name or DL # to ask questions

so call & find out the real answers instead of potentially getting yourself into more trouble

before it's suspended - order a duplicate license online or go to the DMV - use the backup ID to rent the car and be very careful driving - the rental car agencies don't check the validity of your license - just that your name matches -

Yea as a former renter, we just put in the license number and expiration. As long as they had the damn thing on them and the date wasn't expired, then it rolled.

this happened to my mom, but it was in south carolina. the nc dmv didn't even get notice from sc until months after she payed the ticket. she got the notice in the mail that her license was going to be suspended for 30 days, and she went and talked to the judge and was honest about why she was speeding, and he threw it out. she was a single mom that needed to drive to work every day. i don't know if that is still the way things work, but maybe when you get the notice, you can go in and have a good excuse as to why you were speeding, or why you must have your license.....

Yeah, I thought you got some sort of hearing and they may or may not suspend it depending on the results of the hearing.

va doesnt allow you to do any talking without an attorney, or so i was told. so i just wrote in a letter as advised by the clerk. gave certified clean driving record and completed a safe driving course. pretty pissed he didnt lower it, but nothing i can do. im actually moving to va in a few months, so who knows what will happen. ill just call the dmvs anonymously and ask.

That doesn't seem right. VA can't tell NC how to run it's legal system. My mom didn't get a lawyer.

the clerk straight up lied to you if she said "VA doesn't allow you to do any talking without an attorney"

that's completely and totally false (and unconstitutional to boot)

^ what I was thinking

This further proves VA has the most fucked up license laws. If I went to court and they would not reduce my ticket at all I would plead not guilty and lawyer up.

I represented my self in a speeding ticket issue in VA. I took my driving record and spedo test. I stood up in front of the judge and officer and I offered to take the online driving school. The judge agreed to drop my ticket if I followed through with the class...so I did and it was dismissed.
