so my switch has decided it doesn't want to turn completely off... which is fantastic for my battery.

'02 Grand Am, 3.4L V6... anybody have any experience replacing ignition switches on GM's, whether it's worth DIY or somewhere good to take it?

it's actually the steering column lock thats screwed up, you can take the assembly out, and take out the locking pin, and it will work fine, except the wheel won't lock

no, didn't cut it off in drive or forget to shift to park first.

the reverse lockout cable wasn't releasing underneath the shifter. took the shifter cover off and screwed around with it for a minute and found it.

I have this problem with my 98 Grand Prix. I always use the manual shift lock release button on the underside of the steering column to get the key out. Is the fix really that easy? I couldn't find anything on it in my Haynes Manual...

for me it was, but i can't promise you even have the same situation. on the bottom of the shifter to the front left (towards the ignition/dash) is an arm that normally swings forward or back when you shift, there's a cable that runs from it toward the dash... if this arm doesn't move when you shift in and out of park that may be the problem... that's what it was for me. you can see this if you just pull up the rectangular frame piece that's around the gear position indicators at the base of the shifter.
