I'm considering making a stop there on an upcoming trip.
Is it a good excursion? Which tours would you recommend?
And yes, I have tried to search topics.
Thanks. 4/16/2008 11:24:36 AM |

I went last year and thought it was pretty amazing.
If you want to do the Wild Cave Tour, which is more physically challenging, you should book ahead well in advance. I tried to buy tickets a month prior to going and they were sold out.
I stayed one day and saw the Historic and Frozen Niagra tours. Keep in mind that the Mammoth caves are dry and massive for the most part. If you want to see 'pretty' stalactites, it is somewhat limited to the Frozen Niagra tour, which is short. I'd recommend choosing a few of the longer tours that encompass several rooms. I loved the Historic.
There's also some family campgrounds and trails right outside of the caves.
I did Nashville, Mammoth, the Bourbon Trail, and Churchill downs in one week. You may want to consider any of those, as they are all relatively close.

Yup, and it's the most boring cave you're likely to ever see. The only cool thing is that it's huge. I'd recommend going to at least a couple of other caves over it. Onandogga cave in Missouri is probably the most beautiful cave in the world (has features that are unique to it in the world, massive formations, a lot of "living" formations, lots of color, etc.) and Carlsbad cavern is a must see. 4/16/2008 1:50:53 PM |

Well it's not that I am going there specificly to do caving. I am going to Champagne, IL for a trip and was wondering if it would be worth the detour.
Any other input? 4/16/2008 6:05:05 PM |
