My homebody is about to buy a used LCD tv. It was used for a year and comes with transferrable warranty with 2 years left.

42", 720p.

Is this a good deal?

it's not an LCD TV, though, it's just an monitor:

that means u have to use it with a cable box or some outside device that can switch channels and give the monitor a signal?

yep. but that shouldn't be a concern for almost everyone because you need a cable box to get digital channels anyway.

Yea, kind of like the one you're going to need to watch HD cable or satellite. Unless your "hombebody" was planning on being a cheapass & just using an antenna it won't make a damn bit of difference.

the ONLY reason i can think of why it might matter is in a case like mine - since i run it through the HTPC, i can essentially be recording one digital show through the PC and watch something else on the TV...i get "free" regular cable (which includes clear QAM), so it makes a difference in my case

thats not true. you need a digital tuner to get digital channels. you can pick them up over the air or over the cable (with or without a box). i have a tv in my bedroom hooked up to cable WITHOUT a box and i can get digital channels like 4.2, 5.1, 50.1, etc.

anyway, as stated earlier this tv doesn't have a digital OR analog tuner, so you're gonna need some kind of source like a cable box. just wanted to clear up that statement.

i'd say 625$ is rather good for 42". Although it's only 720p.

yeah, it seems that 42" is that magic size where the 720p/1080p debate is a bit more valid

^For that price though, only being 720p isn't too bad.

720p

that's why. wait for 1080p and those prices and you'll have a good reason to make a thread

we have a 42" 1080p westinghouse, but most of the stuff we watch is only 720p. Most of the movies/tv stuff we get is only 720p and it still looks great. Although the 1080p stuff we watch does look better, 720p is still nice. I think that's a hard decision though.
