One of my many beefs with the english language (post-vowel shift obviously) is that fact that words like slaughter and laughter don't rhyme, enough and though come to mind as well.

Spelling has little to do with that, though. "Slaughter" (ON) and "laughter" (OE) are etymologically different, hence the different pronunciations.
Same thing with "though" (ON) and "enough" (OE).
