i hate how all the new skis are fucking huge. nobody makes anything like my old Ultra 150 anymore, with the exception of the GP1300R (which is about to go away)...and hell, even it's bigger than an Ultra.


I'm not sure what I want next. I thought my Ultra was a lot of bang for the buck, and people rave about the handling (on smooth water, at least). I always felt like it skidded around turns rather than leaned in and carved like other skis I've ridden...don't know if that would be an easy fix with sponsons/plates/etc, or if it's an inherent trait of the hull.

I don't know if I want another Ultra, or if I want a GP1200R next (or something else entirely that I've yet to think of)...I'm sure I'll either buy a hot rodded example of either one (or end up doing it myself once I fry the top end). Then I don't know if I'd rather go big-bore or try to extract big power from the stock bore. I don't need an 80 mph ski, but I would like to do 70 GPS. If I could do it on 87 octane, that would be a plus (not that a few cents per gallon more for high-test is that big of a deal at $3.60/gallon, but the ability to gas up at any old marina in a pinch is nice).

Shit, I'd even think about a GP1300R, as it would probably be really easy to get the speed I want out if it...don't know if it would cost enough more upfront to make it not worthwhile, though.

How much are you looking to spend? I'm assuming if you're thinking like you usually do then price isn't as much of a concern as the profit you stand to make..

^^^^^i know we've discussed it before, but i'll say it again... get a gp hull. they've dominated racing and can't be beat in salt water. an honest 70mph is easily doable without really touching the motor internals. however, i wouldn't run 87 octane in any higher performance pwc, even stock. sea doo's are great in smoother water, but i know you plan most of your riding at the coast. the xp/rx is a really nice size though.

unfortunately, this is the last year of the gp1300r. i haven't looked around recently to see what's coming out of the rumor mill, but hopefully they've got another true musclecraft planned to replace it.

i agree with the whole oversizing. 800+ lbs. and 11-12ft. long is asinine despite the power level. you might as well buy a damn jet boat, the point of a performance pwc is lost at that size. i can't believe the prices either for these monsters. i also wish the manufacturers would ditch this "gentleman's agreement" of not breaking the 70mph barrier.

(general rant on) i just think the whole fishing vs. recreation debate is silly. public waters should be open to public use, and everyone should be allowed access. there's just as many retards on boats that think they own the water as there are on pwc's. it boils down to common courtesy. if you see someone fishing in a cove or along a bank, go dick around somewhere else or keep your distance. if you're trying to fish in what you know is a good spot for playing on a pwc, wakeboarding, etc. deal with some activity or go find another spot. it's no different than hunters and ohv's having to co exist on public land. unfortunately, since fishing/hunting represents a much larger community than pwc's/ohv's they're just denied access rather than a compromising solution.

the last thing we need is more government intervention, but if everyone can't play nice then lakes, rivers, the icw, etc. should be sectioned off the same way state and federal land is. you've got fishing limited to certain areas, and other recreation limited to others.

My general rant on, most of the idiots riding those things have little to zero safe time on the water. Absolutely NO clue about the rules on the water. They just get on and ride. And that's pretty much what pisses me off. Ever had to steer an 82 footer hard to port, in a tight channel, because of some jackass on a PWC???

They tend to carry a ton of ignorance at the helm, leading to serious safety issues. Most of the time followed by "oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know"

It's a poor man's speed boat these days and anyone with a couple grand in their pocket can buy one.

Hell, some of the boats I work on have them as toys, and any idiot thats on board can legally jump on one.

And I'm pretty sure that states my case.

The bad thing is I love to ride them.

I think that if a 82 footer were headed my way, I would get the fuck out in a hurry...and people know more etiquette than you may think on the water. It's not really hard to maneuver around boats, if we all just pay attention then it's fine and no problema my friend. I haven't had a real problem with skis zoomin in and out while I was boating and most of the time I am watching them cuz it looks like a blast. They are hard to miss, especially with that 25 foot rooster tail shooting out of the back.

yeah, but you need a license to drive an automobile which should in theory mean that you know the rules of the road. Granted, there are a lot of people that don't . . . but you don't need any knowledge to hop on a small boat and go for a spin.

BTTT. I need some total n00b introductory info and advice on PWCs. I've ridden a lot but never owned or had the opportunity to own. But now i do and am in charge of finding a pair for my parents' new place.


Since they will be using them just as much as me I obviously need something for for cruising and recreation than racing. Definitely not a long 3 seater or anything. Still want something sporty and quick. So help me out, what should i look for and if any what models should i avoid?

From what i've gathered so far... a yamaha 2 stroke with the powervalve (if it has them) mods done and the oil injection bypassed for use of premix is probably the most reliable 2 stroke on the water.
4 strokes.... you don't have to touch yamaha's and they're fine... the supercharged seadoos have supercharger problems and occasionally bottom end problems (usually to those who modified thier supercharger). The non supercharged 4tec seadoos are slow but reliable. And i don't really know shit about Kawasaki. Polaris quit making ski's i think cause their shot at 4 strokes sucked...

^ Yes, go with the newer yamahas. They last forever, sea doos on the other hand are made out of butter and will melt under your ass if your not careful. You can get two VX sports, which are fun to drive and more family oriented. Still lots of power for what they are. You are gonna want something gas friendly obviously and the VX is pretty good on that. You've got lots of options, but I would go with yamaha.

DO NOT get a 1300. 3 cylinder, 2 stroke!!! waste of money, they are heavy, and waste gas, powerful though!
