Someone was telling me I aught to go pick up a copy of 2012. It discusses the mayan predictions of what's to come in the year 2012.

I got onto Barnes and Noble's website to attempt finding it, but my search of "2012" came back with 10+ pages. I'm pretty sure it's a recent book. Anyone have any idea if there's any one book that stands alone on the subject or any general suggestions?

If it helps, the person was describing the book's prediction as having something to do with the earth's polarity switching. Something like that anyway.

np. i forget what youd need to search for. it wasnt about this book but this exact topic. most of it is pretty untrue, manipulated evidence but there was discussion on the topic in at least a couple threads. i think one was started by EarthDogg maybe? i forget though

why would someone suggest you "pick up a copy" of this?
It's all bullshit - you're just paying into the pockets of scammers.

if you want to read something worthwhile on the topic of hoaxes, myths, superstisions, etc, go pick up Flim-Flam by James Randi or The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan. Don't waste your time or money on crap like 2012

fyi, if you still want to know about the mayan calendar business - it's not a "prediction". The Mayans had a calendar that they kept. It happened to end at 2012, because, well.... it couldn't go on forever. They made no statements or predictions about what would happen in 2012 - it's just that that's where they stopped their bookkeeping.

I've got a spanish paper dealing with important aspects of the mesoamerican culture. I was hoping to regurgitate at least a page or half page from the book. Meh, I could probably get that much just from some of the "predictions" described in synopses.

Could be wrong but I don't think they actually predicted anything. It's just when their calendar ended. Any "predictions" would be pure speculation as to why people think their calendar ended on that particular date.

i have the book, and it's fucking awesome. don't listen to these bitches in here telling you not to get it. it's a fucking awesome read.

The book you were looking for: Apocalypse 2012 by Lawrence E. Joseph

It talks about a lot of things; the Mayan prophecies, magnetic pole reversals, moving into a hostile area of the solar system, solar activity spikes, etc

it's awesome in what way -
like a nice piece of good sci-fi or fantasy? or like you feel you're getting the inside scoop on some serious shit that's about to go down in 4 years?

^^ it talks about a lot of not true things. so if you are into conspiracy theories i guess people might be interested. most of the mayan 'prophecies' that people talk about today werent even prophecies made by the mayans rather people interpreting stuff the way they want to to come up with these theories.

^^ like you're getting the inside scoop on some serious shit that's gonna happen in 4 years. I've always been a stickler for end of the world scenarios, so it's interesting to read it and be like "man this shit could actually happen" because aside from the mayan prophecies there are some interesting and scientific aspects such as the dwindling of the magnetic field and the solar spikes

You should just read anything by David Icke. The newest book is "Tales From the Time Loop", which keeps going on about the hidden agendas of 2012 looping back because it's actually how a particualr alien species have placed time portals. That one is kind of loopy, so you should read "Children of the Matrix" which is all about the illuminati conspiracy, and includes some chapters about the Mayan calendar's influence.

Search for em in the New Age section at your local Barnes and Nobles!

^^ i'm still unclear if you think you're actually getting some kind of useful or legitimate information out of this book.
The mayan calendar business is just pure fantasy, and anything involving the magnetic poles or solar spikes is just thrown in there to try to give the book some scientific credibility.

Take the magnetic pole switching - scientists have discovered that the poles have switched at some point in the past, and they speculate that they will switch again at some point in the future, probably in the range of 10,000-100,000's of years. Nothing to be worried about now, and certainly nothing to indicate a precise time when this will happen or any reason to think it is imminent. The author of this book simply heard this theory, then thought "hey 2012 is in the future.... maybe it could happen then!" and decided to put it in

^^ Let me say this. The author of the book explores a lot of different scenarios, and visits people and presents his arguments well. It's a good read. I'm not reading it for some scientific shit or to be in the know. The main reason I'm reading it is because I've always been a stickler for end of the world scenarios, particularly 2012, so I was eager to read this book. If you think I'm getting any useful information out of this book, then yes- there are some topics in the book that are worth reading about, because whether or not shit goes down in 2012 there are still some relevant topics in there. I assure you that they didn't just throw in the pole reversal thing in there just to give it scientific credibility. The book is divided into 6 parts, only one of which talks about the Mayans. Have you even read the book? The point is: if you're into end of the world scenarios, and you want an interesting read, then check it out. If you want scientific information, then go read a fucking science text book. I don't really know what the fuck you are looking for so just read the fucking book and then you'll understand

With the obvious exception that it cannot be know today if something terrible is going to occur 4 years from now.
