So the AW4 swap I did didn't go so well as far as wiring is concerned, I could not find a wiring diagram to match up perfectly. I had to guess on several wires and it didn't work. I have to shift the thing by hand which means I don't have a second gear and I can't tell if it's going into OD or not. I pulled some numbers off of the service tag. I googled them and called the dealer, can't find any info. All I need is the year so that I can better locate a diagram. Here are the markings:
30-43LE 481079
95J 56779 ....F
(the F is located slightly below the rest of the numbers but I think 95JF56779 is the full number)
All I've been able to figure out is that this was originally a 2wd XJ. 5/7/2008 7:09:31 PM |

What is it going into????
I just swapped a 95 AW4 into my 88 MJ, and had to combine the wires for both(MJ was a manual, so there was no wiring harness present for the trans). I have a complete wiring diagram of the 88 XJ, and i think i have complete info for the wires on the 95 trans, should be the same from 90-96, but im not positive. If you find out the year and want either of these, let me know.
By the way, mine worked perfect the first time
EDIT: I wouldnt drive too much til you get it figured out, it will make a lot of heat going down the road without torque converter lockup.

how many wires is several? where are the coming from? what did you guess and hook them to? what are you using for a tcm?
off hand, it sounds like you might have a wiring issue with the range sensor, the shift solenoids, or the tps input... 5/7/2008 11:42:58 PM |

My 96 ZJ.
I'm not sure of the year. I was told it was a 95 but the wiring diagram from 95 didn't work perfectly. I got diagrams from 93-97 and none of them matched perfectly. I haven't driven it much, however I am trying to get it working properly in the next few days. I'm trying to tow it home and let my brother drive it during the summer so he can get a job. It stays in 3rd (4th maybe?) when I put it in D but shifts fine manually.
It's been about a year since I did the swap but I think 4 or 5 wires I had to guess on. They were pretty much all solenoids. If I can get diagrams to match up i'll redo the wiring 100% to be sure.
On a slightly unrelated note, anybody have a trailer they want to let me borrow? I need to tow the ZJ to charlotte and don't want to pay uhaul 120 bucks. 5/8/2008 10:23:42 PM |

yeah, i'll let you borrow my trailer if you keep me in mind the next time i need some tires mounted or oil change or something. you need a brake controller though if you don't already have one, with your jeep it'll be around 10k lbs. total.
i'd say you almost certainly wired the solenoid harness wrong then if those are the ones you guessed on. does the tcm you're using supposedly match that transmission or what? are you positive it's a good unit? iirc, there is a harness off the transmission with a black connector. that's what houses the solenoid wires and the speed sensor wires. the other plug (gray?) is for the range selector stuff. there should be:
-1-2 solenoid wire -3-4 solenoid wire -lockup solenoid wire -input speed sensor wire -input speed sensor ground -output speed sensor -output speed sensor ground
what kind of diagrams are you using? if it's haynes or something, throw that crap away and find a fsm or someone with alldata. i'm assuming you probably have access to something decent at merchants though. the one i did the owner provided diagrams he got from somewhere, but i can't remember where. i think they might have been scanned/copied from each vehicle's fsm. what about the jeep boards? with as popular of a swap as this is and the ridiculous amount of jeep owners i would think there has to be some quality diagrams/writeups easily found for free. 5/8/2008 11:43:45 PM |

I do have a brake controller.
The tcm I don't think matches perfectly but should work. I'm guessing the transmission is a 95 and I think I pulled the tcm from a 93/94 XJ. Wire colors won't match perfect but they should have the same connections. I'm not 100% positive it's a working unit. The wiring diagrams I got were from mitchell or alldata, I don't remember which one we had at work at the time (we switched to mitchell sometime mid-late last year). I also got my hands on the FSM for a 95 XJ.
When I go back to charlotte i'm going to stop by pull a part, they have a few XJ's that should have what I need. If they have it i'll pull another transmission/tcm for like 50 bucks and get something that matches. Otherwise i'm just going to redo the wiring anyway hoping and praying I can make some sense of the diagrams.
As far as forums, etc.. I could not find a single ZJ application write up, and the only two write ups I could find were TJ AX-15 - AW4 conversions so they didn't apply 100%.

i just noticed this:

what did you do about the tailhousing/rear speed sensor then? keep in mind there was a change when obd II came in 96 from a 1ppm sensor to a 4ppm sensor. obviously this would cause some differences in the signal to the tcm.
don't overlook your tps either. if it's wired wrong or the part itself is faulty that'll cause eratic or no shifting as well. it's just one wire from it to the tcm i believe.

I have a LP30 here at the house. What do you need one for? 5/9/2008 12:32:41 AM |

i really need a set of 3.73 gears in good shape... but i'd buy a whole axle since they're so cheap and not screw with gear setup. 5/9/2008 12:54:54 AM |

It's out of a 2000 XJ so whatever that means. I'll go out later and check the tag. Buddy says he wants 30 bucks for the whole axle. 5/9/2008 8:57:39 PM |

i'll take it if it's got 3.73's. lemme know. 5/11/2008 12:51:53 AM |
