Quote : | "CLEARWATER, Fla. - A judge in Florida says the 17-year-old son of wrestler Hulk Hogan should serve eight months in jail for reckless driving. Nick Bollea was led off to begin his sentence immediately after Friday's ruling. He will be on five years' probation and lose his driving privileges for three years.
Authorities say Bollea was racing a friend in his father's sports car when he clipped a curb, spun out of control and slammed into a palm tree in downtown Clearwater, Florida, last August.
The impact left his friend critically injured and in need of lifetime medical care.
Bollea pleaded no contest to the reckless driving charge." |

^^^fuck him for what? it's a bad situation and nick made poor choices, but lets keep the facts clear. his passenger wasn't innocent. he knew what was going on, and he chose to ride. it sucks he's got to live with that decision the rest of his life, but ultimately he's responsible for his actions. no one forced him into the car, and he didn't get in under the impression they were going for a leisurely sunday drive. he also wasn't even wearing his seatbelt.
prosecute and sentence him based on the wreckless driving/street racing, but to let the sob story of his passenger influence the decision isn't fair imo. comparatively, 8 months is extremely excessive even considering his past driving history. the kid obviously needs a wake up call, but i'm not sure that 8 months in jail is the answer. he's effectively being punished for his friends injury, which i don't think is acceptable. we all know the sentence would have been MUCH different had his friend walked away also, even with minor injuries. hell, his friend might have even been sitting in court with him as an accomplice.

wait, his friend didn't wear a seatbelt?! I bet a 98 Supra is actually decently safe for a sports/touring car. I'm sure it has dual airbags and crumple zones and stuff, plus it's not a tiny thing like a Miata. That's probably why Nick didn't get too hurt. I've driven a 93 Mk IV and it seemed solid enough. 5/12/2008 9:54:29 PM |
BigBlueRam All American 16852 Posts user info edit post |
^no seatbelt. nick was wearing his. the initial report also estimated they were only going ~60mph in a 40mph zone, and that wet roads were the primary contributing factor, not excessive speed. as far as i know, that didn't change as the investigation progressed. 5/12/2008 11:52:35 PM |

^^^car being and feeling solid has nothing to do with safety. great majority of full size trucks feel solid, but fare horribly in crash tests. but...yeah, supra is decently safe car, but probably less safe than, say, new corolla.

^^it was like 7:30pm. the roads were wet. i don't think an exact speed was ever proven, just an estimate of 60mph+. the guy he was racing admitted to hitting ~100mph before letting off, but that doesn't prove nick was. he had to be behind the other guy, because he crossed from the curbside lane to the median. nick claimed to only have been going 30-40mph, but the accident photos make that pretty hard to believe.
i'm betting the boost came on hard early-mid 2nd gear (60-70mph probably?), tires broke loose, and he lost it. even on dry pavement, a big single supra on street tires can get away from you in a hurry when it spools. it's like an on/off switch.
either way, all that is beside the point. his passenger chose not to wear a seatbelt, and he had to know how the driving was going to be.

who races with a passenger? sure, street racing is kind of a no-big-deal kind of thing, but if you actually wanted to win, adding another 150lbs isnt the way to go.
fuck the kid anyways. i saw the 1 episode where he wanted to be a drift (the sliding thing) racer and his dad bought him a racing car. all the other contestants were pissed. it essentially amounted to straight up cheating. and then he crashed it like, twice? 5/13/2008 8:20:51 AM |

well, if they were racing "for real" a passenger could have been part of the negotiations. it frequently is to even cars out. i highly doubt that was the case though, this was just friends dicking around. 5/13/2008 8:26:17 AM |

(CNN video didn't work for me, but I am listening to something on Youtube right now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-GyqgOxV4g) I Haven't listened to every minute of the stuff, but at the beginning here he is just really upset (Crying etc) about being in some kind of solitary confinement, so I'll address that for a second.
I'm not going to defend Nick, but he's what, 18 and in some kind of solitary confinement(ish)? That'll fuck you up in the head especially at that age. It's like one night he got behind the wheel of his dad's super cool sports car, a high schooler's dream come true, and now he's in a nightmare and he can't wake up... Once again, not defending him or saying he didn't deserve jail, but I can understand how that would make him act hysterically especially in [what he thought was] a private conversation with his own mother. And his mom was just being a mom, saying comforting words etc.

this dude in my HS drunk drove with his friends in the car, KILLED one of his friends, and only got sentenced to 90 days. he did 30.
the 'solitary confinement' they talk about isn't like what you see in the old prison movies, with water dripping on you and dogfood being served on a rusty steel tray underneath the door. he'll do a lot of reading, a lot of thinking and probably won't learn a damn thing from the experience. 5/29/2008 8:23:12 AM |

I knew a guy who drove drunk, ran from the cops, turned his headlights off in the middle of the chase, and crashed into a house; killing one person and severely injuring two more. I don't remember exactly how much time he served, but it wasn't much at all. Once he got out he dressed up like a woman and tried to rob a bank. All that time in prison and that's the best he could come up with.5/29/2008 10:30:50 AM |

It's like he didn't realize jail was going to suck. It is punishment. It's going to suck.
And take responsibility for your actions. Both he and his dad seem to think that it is all the vegetable's fault. Yes, I'm sure God struck down on the vegetable and your poor son just happened to be the innocent victim of God's wrath because he was driving at the time. 5/29/2008 10:47:16 AM |

Since September 2006, within the first year of obtaining his license, Bollea was ticketed four times.[10]
In 2007, he gave an interview with Rides in which he talked about his habit of driving fast on public roads. In this interview he said that he was driving a silver Viper between Miami and Tampa when he was pulled over three times for driving in excess of 100 mph. Bollea told the interviewer that the final stop — the only one resulting in a ticket — he was driving 123 mph in a 50 mph zone.[3] The events described in the interview do not match police records.[11] His mother has said that the interview was exaggerated.[5] The ticket which most closely resembles the events described in the Rides interview is a September 26, 2006 citation showing that he was driving a Mercedes (not a Viper), was stopped twice (not three times), and was ticketed for going 115 mph (not 123 mph) in a 70 mph zone (not a 50 mph zone).[11][12]
On February 8, 2007, he was ticketed in Dade County, Florida for driving 57 mph in a 30 mph zone, and on April 25, 2007, he was ticketed and received four points on his license for driving 106 mph in a 70 mph zone in Osceola County.[11] On August 10, 2007, he was ticketed in Pinellas Park after his 1998 Toyota was recorded going 82 mph in a 45 mph construction zone.[11]" |
