the old thread was too old.
I'm looking at this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3094180&Sku=S130-8002
The reviews on bestbuy.com though are kinda crappy. Any advice on this one? 5/17/2008 4:30:32 PM |

Is it true that TigerDirect sells a lot of refurbed stuff as new? hence the cheap prices, etc? 5/18/2008 4:18:54 PM |

i've got the 500gb version. Never had any issues with mine, but I've heard that since there is no fan and the power brick is located under the hard drive, it can heat the drive up to the point where it won't operate. I'm going to take my drive out of the case and stick it inside my computer one of these days. Even though I haven't had any issues, it can't be good for the longevity of it. 5/18/2008 4:25:32 PM |

Fry's has a really good deal on them right now. It sells out frequently and then comes back on, so keep paying attention to it.

i don't know if it's just me, but i've never had good luck with drives that only have 8mb buffers...over usb, when transferring large files (which, granted, i do a lot of), anything less than 16mb craps out half the time...my crappiest drives are 16mb these days, and my nicer ones are all 32mb
nearly all are seagates, though 5/19/2008 9:42:34 AM |

Please correct me if i am wrong, but arent isnt the transfer rate using USB limited anyway, in which case 8mb is okay?

yes and no...USB certainly won't get up to its theoretical speed, but my vista box consistently transfers at 11-14mb/s
so when i had files larger than 8mb, it would SOMETIMES throw me delayed write failures...i haven't had that issue even once with my 16mb cache drives (which, i would assume, is partly because i've never seen USB get that sort of sustained data transfer rate)...everything else is the same except the drives themselves
*shrug*
