you should stretch before also... i usually run about 1/4-1/2 mile at a slow-medium pace (to get warmed up), then stretch, and continue..5/19/2008 11:04:26 AM |

I use to not stretch before running and have been perfectly fine that way.
But in the past few months I've done some good, hard running and gotten some sore calves that prevented me from running for a few days. So now I stretch...before and after.

+foam rolling does wonders, before (although this isn't always an option for me) and after/later/off times.

I didn't know what dynamic stretch was, so I googled it. This site for the James Madison strength and conditioning program seems to explain it pretty well and has pictures to demonstrate.

stretching should be treated as its own work out, not as a before and after to another workout
stretch at the very least 30 seconds for all ranges of motion, it takes that long to get to the center of any given large muscle
any longer than 30 and your muscles will start to contract and negate the benefits of stretchin, any less and you wont get a full stretch
and it shouldnt be painful, each position should be tight yet comfortable
and you have to warm up before your stretch, like jogging and calisthenics or else youre bending a frozen steak, stretching is not a warm up

This is what I have my lacrosse players do before practice and games. We used to just do static before and after, but this has seemed to cut down on the cramps and injuries that occurred this year. Could have just been coincidence, but I will continue to do it in the future.6/22/2008 9:54:07 AM |

I just do a light warm-up in the range of motion that I plan to be active in, and then do static stretching after the workout.
Static stretching before exercise has been shown to increase the likeliness of injury as well as reduce strength and stamina.

EPIC 10-YEAR BUMP
I finally have my personal and professional life (mostly) figured out, so now I can give my diet and conditioning better attention without the added other stresses.
I have a big belly and zero flexibility. My shoulders and and neck are always feeling stiff, and I had lower back surgery (discectamy) 6 years ago and the area around it often becomes sore after sitting or standing in one position for too long.
I've been going to the gym when I can, but I feel like my workouts are limited by my mobility. What can I do to start fixing these problems? Eating right is obviously #1, and I'm working on that, but what else should I be trying? I've done a few stretch routines I've found on youtube but I don't think I'm flexible enough to even be trying most of them. 6/8/2018 7:23:30 PM |

I've played a lot of sports and high kicking martial arts have gotten me the most flexible. taekwondo and muay thai are what ive practiced the most. not getting knocked the fuck out is a great motivator (muay thai). also, stretching in the hot tub works really well

Depends on what your workouts entail. I find that stretching after lifting can be very effective, notably after dead-lift. My hamstrings are just awful, and I find that the dead-lifting exercise itself helps as it pulls you downward, especially if you try to do it more straight-legged. 6/11/2018 2:28:59 PM |
