I made a new thread about this because it doest really apply for my dispatches thread.
Nothing like radicals being to radical to radicalize everyone against them.
I strongly suggest reading the entire article.

Quote : | "Most of these clerics and former militants, of course, have not suddenly switched to particularly progressive forms of Islam or fallen in love with the United States (all those we talked to saw the Iraqi insurgency as a defensive jihad), but their anti-Al Qaeda positions are making Americans safer. If this is a war of ideas, it is their ideas, not the West's, that matter. The U.S. government neither has the credibility nor the Islamic knowledge to effectively debate Al Qaeda's leaders, but the clerics and militants who have turned against them do. Juan Zarate, a former federal prosecutor and a key counterterrorism adviser to President Bush, acknowledged as much in a speech in April when he said, "These challenges from within Muslim communities and even extremist circles will be insurmountable at the end of the day for Al Qaeda."" |
Quote : | "Kamal El Helbawy, the Muslim Brotherhood leader who helped bring in moderates at the Finsbury Park mosque in London, believes that Al Qaeda's days may be numbered: "No government, no police force, is achieving what these [religious] scholars are achieving. To defeat terrorism, to convince the radicals ... you have to persuade them that theirs is not the path to paradise."" |

you read articles like this, and it proves why this conflict was worth all the treasure and time we spent.
yet i'm sure every liberal poster here, will respond and say iraq still has nothing to do with al qaeda and still claim this conflict is 100% waste. i'll enjoy my safety while all of you research your conspiracy theories and complain. 5/25/2008 6:57:32 PM |

They are losing their legitimacy. Without that, they will lose recruits.
I am thinking that Al Qaeda will exist in some form, but it will lose its ability to do any real ability for large scale attacks. 5/25/2008 6:57:51 PM |

I'd safely classify all 3 of those in the same group as terrorists that want to kill americans and cause chaos that need to be destroyed. Yes. Yes I would.
Sorry you aren't getting your way politically at the moment. 5/25/2008 8:04:42 PM |

yup^
if you don't want to believe that fighting al qaeda in it's own lands isn't helping to end international terrorism then feel free to buy into any other theories you want.
we aren't at war with the iraqi ppl like half of americans believe. we're just a massive police force taking out group that wants to do anything to kill americans, and we're winning.
2001 - 2008, the last terrorist incidents were SUV's driving around on a college campus. wow. we are failing horribly 5/26/2008 9:25:54 AM |

Lets stick to Al Qaeda.
The recruits will go to an organization that has more legitimacy. So whichever organization that is, Al Qaeda will feel threatened by them and attack them. They have already threatened to send their fighters to Lebanon to fight Hezbullah. And the leadership of Yemen used to be Al Qaeda members, so they are going to get a safe state like they wanted in Yemen.
The good thing about this option for them is that it borders Saudi Arabia. With the failed attack on Saudi Arabia Al Qaeda's support in Saudi Arabia has dropped to 10% says that article. Depending on how bad Yemen gets, we might have an ally or player right next door to help contain or reduce the threat. 5/26/2008 9:27:05 AM |
