Digital distribution needs to become the norm and brick and mortar needs to go fuck off. Blockbuster can sell hardware like Circuit City. 5/26/2008 9:31:10 PM |

the only positive thing is they are droppingg the rental price to 3.99
but they are taking 4 days off rental time

Yeah, and the best way to gasp for revenue is to alienate your customer base and make them not want to rent from you.

It almost seems like they're trying to force the move to digital distributions, because renting digitally practically gives you more freedom than this BS.5/26/2008 9:53:15 PM |
parsonsb All American 13206 Posts user info edit post |
but with DRM which digital distribution will be heavily can actually restrict freedom more than this
as of right now i can rent a dvd and watch it in anything that plays a dvd as many times as i want
but if i download a file they can restrict the number of times i watch it, or what medium i watch it on
but they can't do drm free because then people would just dl the movie once for the rental fee and copy it so its really a catch 22 5/26/2008 9:55:43 PM |

People can already do that now with BB/Netflix. Considering most people don't have a desire to rewatch or even buy most movies they are RENTING, I doubt they lose much money from this.
The difference is with DRM free movies, instead of paying to download it, I can just download the same exact thing from BT for free.
They are already starting to realize that DRM-free music makes more money than DRMed music because it removes all the hassle of getting it to play wherever you want it to. They'll eventually realize the same thing with movies. Joe-consumer doesn't like the hassle of bit torrent, an easy-to-use and FAST iTunes like model that will play on my iPod/Zune/Sansa will always win in the face of a DRM-laden model, when compared to piracy. Some people pirate because they're jews (no offense to any actual Jews), but I bet a sizable chunk, possibly a majority, pirate because they don't care to learn the nuances of DRM.5/26/2008 10:09:41 PM |

Blockbuster creates a social aspect to movie watching, too.
I'm kinda boring. For me, one of the chillest things to do with friends is get some ice cream and then dick around in Blockbuster for a half hour picking out movies and being like, "OMG, remember when you picked that really bad movie! I'm so not letting you pick. AHA Just kidding. You can pick one, but we're watching it last so I can go to sleep then. AHA Just kidding again. I'll watch it with you. But seriously put Poison Ivy 2 back. There's something wrong with you..." And then you get to go through the little line and pick out your candies together.
Fun!

I really believe we are getting to a point where new ideas/stories in movies are few and far between. Its been awhile since a truely good movie with an original idea/story has come out.
Also, who the fuck still goes to Block Buster??
Downloading FTW!
I can get any movie I want, for free, in under 2 hours.
Or Netflix. And no, its not the same as BB. You constantly have a stream of movies coming in. And as lazy as we are, there is no way someone is going to go to Block Buster that often to rent a movie on a "list" 5/27/2008 1:53:13 AM |

Don't know where you are getting yours, but the quality I get is just fine. I hook up my laptop to my home theater system and 46in TV and its pretty damn good. If I feel like it, I will download the DVD file and burn it for an almost perfect copy and watch it in my DVD player, although it takes about 5x as long to download.
