Quote :
"TOKYO — As if paying homage to Subaru, Toyota is co-developing a new lineup of rear-wheel-drive sporty coupes employing a revised version of the Subaru Impreza's platform, boxer engine and transmission. Toyota's largest contribution to the mix will be product planning and its impeccable quality control.

The Toyota model, still to be named, will be sold exclusively in Japan, while the Subaru-badged model will be marketed worldwide. The mechanical package will be identical, but both Toyota and Subaru will create exterior designs to differentiate their cars from each other.

The basis for this new radical project is to take Subaru's well-known 4WD powertrain and modify it to create a new rear-wheel-drive setup. Slated to be built at Subaru's Gunma plant in Japan, both Toyota and Subaru models will employ a revised version of the naturally aspirated boxer 2.0-liter unit generating around 220 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox from the current Impreza WRX STI.

Surprisingly, the joint Toyota-Subaru R&D team has chosen the out-of-production, front-wheel-drive Honda Integra Type R as its benchmark, because its styling, performance parameters and dimensions mirror what the development team wants to create.

Expected to ride on a 103-inch wheelbase, the 2,866-pound coupes will use a 2+2 seating configuration.

Slated for a late 2011 debut, the coupes are expected to be priced starting just under $20,000.

What this means to you: Good times on the horizon for fans of low-end rear-wheel-drive coupes."

looks like everyone needs some hype R powR in them at some point.

I wonder if that concept is even close to the final design there in the posted picture...

They could make it look really neat. Or they could make it look non-assy. That concept is leaning a little towards assy.

This is old news... they have been working on a joint car for over a year now.

^^^^ That's not a concept... that's an artist's impression.

why on earth would they put in the 2.0NA instead of the 2.0 turbo or the 2.5 turbo?? well soob stuff is like legos, I'm sure a swap would be easy

priced under 20,000 could be a limiting factor. I'd suspect they'll have higher end models with different engine options. 220hp from a 2.0 H4 isn't bad though.

[Edited on May 28, 2008 at 8:53 AM. Reason : oh wait.. but no, subaru will find a way to put a turbo on it cuz of costs]

^S2000, rsx-s

an artist's impression? so someone drew up a random modern-looking sporty coupe out of thin air, ha

is a boxer engine any more or less conducive to high revs? 220hp 2.0L sounds like it will go pretty high (even if peaking at 6500)

That doesn't really add up for me... it has to be boosted because @ 100% VE at even 2.2 liters at 6,500 rpm is only 174 hp

So that pretty much settles that... she's a turbo she HAS to be.... either that or they're getting good with voodoo over there @ yota.

And yes i know slightly better than 100% v.e. can be achieved but again thats race car voodoo.

Ok so i think this article is 90% b.s.

A. I mean the transmission cannot be that similar because not only is the pto/center diff for the front wheels built into the transmission SO IS THE FRIGGIN FRONT DIFFERENTIAL so why would you use that???

B. as i said those numbers really don't add up... and i know my calcs aren't right on and i'm assuming 13.3 afr and that every ounce of fuel is burning...so if anything i think i'd be high on that estimate not low.... but then again i'm using an equation for a boosted motor with the boost variable set @ 0

^ are the numbers you are using in your calculation intended for crank or wheel horsepower? I agree that 200+ crank hp at 6500 rpm on a 2 liter n/a motor doesn't add up though, just seems really unlikely to do that at less than 8k

no i didn't subtract any drivetrain loss.. but actually i found that the s2000s run rich up high and still burn nearly all of it... so it could do a little better than that.

Yeah that could be either really nice looking or really ugly.

I wish they would've revealed a little more of the styling because as is I think it's going to look really ugly.

Cover up the nice parts of the car and uncover the turd-ass parts... Blech.

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/04/subaru-impreza-coupe-coming-in-2010/

Quote :
"As previously reported, both versions will be sporting separate sheet metal to differentiate the two coupes from one another. We'd suspect that the Toyota version will be fitted with a traditional trunk, while the Subaru version will get a hatch similar to that found on the WRX/STI. The image above takes all the right cues from the current Impreza, particularly the aggressive roofline and hunkered stance, and ratchets it up a notch with a new front bumper, swept back headlamps and bulging fender flares.

As we're already aware, both the Toyota version (which supposedly won't make it to U.S. shores) and the Subaru variant will be powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter boxer, sending around 180 hp to the rear wheels. AutoExpress claims that a 300-hp version equipped with the turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four is also destined for production, along with an all-wheel-drive version further down the road. For those of us that have been dreaming of an STI-powered GC8 coupe, this could spare us the considerable headache and expense when it goes on sale in 2012."

I guess this thing is being named the Corolla AE86.

Read this in a R&T article.
Quote :
"It will use the Subaru's 2.0-liter flat-4 with at least 150bhp. The car is still expected to weigh less than 3000lb, so we're talking a quick car for less than $20,000 (some insiders are hinting at $15,000). THere's also the possibility that a Subaru version will be offered- essentially the same car with a different body style. The front-engine/rear-drive coupe could hit dealerships as early as 2009.

While we're not sure if such a car will ever make it to the U.S., we do have a pretty clear picture as to why Toyota has been buying up shares in the small Shinjuku-based car company."

Subie + Toy?

Come on, you can't go wrong with that kind of combination (atleast on the engineering side, styling is another issue).
