The whole wireless system (multiple carriers) in USA sucks. Why should anyone have to sign a contract to get service? In the UK, this isnt how things are, buy a phone and use it on any network for as long as you want.
Why cant the FCC just step in and make a decision to require all providers use the same technologies and allow users to roam freely from provider to provider. Since one of the reasons the FCC exists is to help the nations people use the spectrum fairly. The ability for one provider to hold a phone type hostage (iPhone) to a single provider for 5 years, seems very like a monopoly when the company that developed the phone holds all the patents that are so vaguely written that no other manufacture can produce anything that resembles it.
Damn this whole topic for me sucks!
my 2 cents, now trash me for speaking out
ohh yeah, this phone is trash, doesnt have gestures for anything close to the browsing capaliblites that the iPhone does. eg. no zooming in on the pages and rotating. and the mail app doesnt support imap

eh, i still have a lot more reviews to read, but I'm pretty sure it supports imap and that they wouldn't release a browser with no zoom capability. I know for a fact you can rotate it and it also uses the camera to scroll up, down, left, right on the webpages.
I don't want another treo and the mogul is probably more than i'd use. maybe the touch who knows. Regardless, I have to get a new phone, this sanyo clamshell backup is a dinosaur. 6/2/2008 3:43:22 PM |

It looks like the Instincts main marketing tactic is "we're better than the iPhone". http://www.nowisgood.com/ Let's see how many of those points are still valid after next week. They have 5 points where they excel over the iPhone 1. Maybe they'll have 1 or 2 after iPhone 2 comes out 1 - fast internet - iPhone2 w/ 3G 2 - Live TV - looks to be a combination of fast internet service + deals with content providers. 3G + iPhone Apple SDK could solve this one 3 - GPS - maybe 4 - Video camera - maybe 5 - Music Download - will be solved with 3G 6/2/2008 4:28:17 PM |

Personally I'm holding out for an Android capable device. Not to be a fanboi or anything, but if they can match awesome hardware to the final released mobile OS later this year/early next, they just might have something. 6/2/2008 4:32:27 PM |

Well, I had the Instinct in my possession yesterday, and it's a pretty nice phone. Though, I have the HTC Touch, so I wasn't overly impressed.
This phone isn't going to save Sprint like they're hoping for. 6/3/2008 2:34:30 PM |

I don't think this is the case. In fact I was just in the UK last week and they had quite a few carriers (few i can remember are O2, orange, Vodaphone, and T-mobile).
I remember going into various stores and each store had thier respective phones that were locked to that network. So the phones you buy in the UK are not generally unlocked. One of the biggest indications of this was that they had "unlock your phone" places EVERYWHERE.
I even went into 2 stores and asked them about it and they said to use any of thier phones on any network you would have to unlock them. Plus everyones phones had the provider on the phone just like we do.6/3/2008 3:37:46 PM |

Quote : | "For starters, it sounds like it has a very promising camera. At 5-megapixels and including anti-shake, this may be the first camera on a phone that produces pictures you would actual think of printing, not just posting to Facebook. This is an improvement over the 2-megapixel cameras on both the first generation iPhone and the Samsung Instinct.
The touch-screen smartphone, which runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and features Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Opera 9.5 as its web browser, will also have Wi-Fi. That's something the Instinct also lacks.
Like the Instinct, the Omnia has visual voice mail, 3G capability, Bluetooth, an FM radio and GPS functionality. The smartphone, of course, also doubles as a music player and with 16GB will be able to hold up to 4,000 songs or 100 minutes of video, according to Samsung.
How it will compare to the new 3G iPhone Apple is rumored to reveal on Monday remains to be seen." |

see, that's one thing I think that should have been on the Instinct is a 5MP camera. I don't know production costs, but I doubt the difference btw a 2 and a 5mp sensor is really that much.
I really don't see why Sprint doesn't have anything with better than a 2mp. 6/9/2008 9:27:03 AM |

There's quite a few phones with 5mp cameras on them. The nokia n95 has been out for a while, plus a few others. The new samsung i900 Omnia looks pretty impressive though:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/06/08/samsungs-i900-omnia-gets-official-hands-on-treatment/
The 7.2Mbps HSDPA is really a plus, mainly if i can tether it to my laptop to use as a modem. The display is larger than the iphones, but one of the things that disappoints me is its low resolution 400 by 240 display. This will not be able to compete with the iphone's 480 by 320 display. Plus if i'm buying a new phone it's got to be atleast 640 by 480 or 800 by 480. The 8gig/16gig options are nice too. But yeah still holding out for the xperia. 6/9/2008 9:36:57 AM |

^oh, yeah I know that it might get annoying showing it to every single joe blow that hears about it and walks in off the street. But it still seems a bit counterintuitive, especially since they're pumping it pretty hard.

^^not really. It'll still suck in features. Sure the interface is great and it'll now be open to developers but apple is never on top of things when it comes to features and hardware. They usually are the last company to do something (hard-drive based mp3 player, tv tuner, gaming, last to update thier gpus/cpus/lcds, list goes on and on...) I'm pretty sure it'll still have no expansion port, and still a low res 480 by 320 display. People think apple is the first to do things because they market things so well but they're usually the last. I remember getting the first harddrive based creative mp3 player way before the ipod came out, and once the ipod came out everyone was like "wow this is new and crazy" but it was just thier marketing.
There will always be a bunch of phones with better features and specs than the iphone. The reason the iphone is sweet is because of ease of use and interface, not features or hardware. I think calling something an "iphone killer" depends on what you're looking for in a phone. If you're looking for ease of use and interface, but not necessarily specs or features then an iphone is for you. But if you're looking for something with the lastest and greatest hardware and features than there are plenty of other options out there. Funny article: http://gizmodo.com/5014261/in-japan-cellphones-are-too-complicated-but-the-iphone-is-too-simple
the first comment is funny:
Quote : | "Until the iPhone starts dispensing previously worn girls underwear, it won't sell in Japan. If you think I'm a perv, Google Japanese vending machines." |
I mean the biggest reasons why i didn't get an iphone the first time around were because of it's outdated specs. -320 by 480 display has been around for ever. Larger 640 by 480 displays were around at the time the iphone came out. -No expansion port. -No 3g, when most smartphones on the market had 3g. -No stereo bluetooth. -Tethering was hard. -Low resolution camera (phones with 5mp cameras were around at the time the iphone came out).
I'm about specs and features AND usability.

I mean, the purpose of this thread was so far off from anything relating to iphone comparisons. It's just the way sprint is marketing the instinct. I've been with them almost 5 years and I wouldn't even consider switching to ATT or let myself turn into one of those iphone wielding toolbags (not to stereotype all users of course). I just saw this phone on Crave and started to shift away from the HTC phones I previously had been set on and wanted to get some feedback. 6/9/2008 11:00:25 AM |

If there's one thing I've realized over the last month. It's that verizon has the worst phone selection. A ton for texting, and lots of blackberry selection, just not many slick phones.
No instinct, no iphone, no omnia, the best samsung phone they have is the glyde/alias. 6/9/2008 11:11:24 AM |
