That being said, McCain is no "war hero." He's a war criminal who bombed farmers and villagers from the comfort of his jet and then was so incompetent that he got shot down. If anything, he's a "war failure."

That's cool about your granddad -- but he was up against a viable enemy in a war that was justifiable. He's a war hero for sure. Getting captured isn't necessarily a sign you're a fuck up, but it definitely is in the case of McCain who had virtually every tactical advantage possible.

Face it: "war loser" McCain got shot down by his out-matched, out-teched enemy. McCain had virtually infinite superiority and still managed to crash his plane after basically massacring civilians. Doing it from a plane isn't any better than doing it in person.

Given that the United States was up against a massive network of Soviet-supplied anti-aircraft batteries and a fleet of sophisticated MiG-21's, I'd say his flights were hardly "comfortable." You can complain about whether or not Americans should have fought in Vietnam, but his role as a fighter pilot was just as dangerous as many other military roles during the war. The NVA had a solid anti-aircraft defense and probably the best fightercraft that the Soviets could supply at the time.

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to this race. As much as I disagree with both candidates on some of their issues, if either is elected, it's still a significant step up from what we currently have.
