Well after those numbers came out, Gore decided to put in some solar panels in his house among other things to help lessen his energy consumption.

Good for him.

Except now, he's using more energy than he did last year.

Quote :
"In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

In February 2007, An Inconvenient Truth, a film based on a climate change speech developed by Gore, won an Academy Award for best documentary feature. The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research uncovered that Gore’s Nashville home guzzled 20 times more electricity than the average American household.

After the Tennessee Center for Policy Research exposed Gore’s massive home energy use, the former Vice President scurried to make his home more energy-efficient. Despite adding solar panels, installing a geothermal system, replacing existing light bulbs with more efficient models, and overhauling the home’s windows and ductwork, Gore now consumes more electricity than before the “green” overhaul.

Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.

“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a Nashville-based free market think tank and watchdog organization, obtained information about Gore’s home energy use through a public records request to the Nashville Electric Service."

It's ok though, he bought some green credits from himself.

What a hypocrite.

very good point marko.

What a great statement there. It sums up my opinion of gore and global warming.

If he was that deathly afraid of global warming as he reportedly is, he would change his lifestyle.

That's something I never understood about politicians. They get so much flack for their houses and stuff... why not just live in a semi-normal house? The wife probably.

I cannot imagine anything more important than Al Gore's power bill.

Truly, we need more think tanks and organizations to dedicate themselves to this important question.

not that i feel like this is really a topic worthy of debate, but does this time period include when the house was being renovated? i could see that using far more electricity than during normal use. otherwise i don't know. it seems ridiculous to me to live in such a gigantic house to begin with.

So he uses 19x times the amount of energy as the average household a month

He basically runs an international non-profit agency from his home. To think he would use anywhere near the average is ridiculous, as his impact on global energy use is extremely low when compared to the size of the energy savings his advocacy has provided. In other words, he has pushed the world to save billions, if not trillions of kW hours and pounds of CO2.

It doesn't quite do that, but it does make a skeptic wonder how much he really believes what he's been saying.

Libertarians utilize all manner of public services while preaching against them. They sincerely believe in getting rid of those services, but with the system as it is, it's hard to get by without them.

God-only-knows how many Republican politicians in recent years have railed against one thing (homosexuality) while actively doing it (in airport bathrooms, as an example). I think some of them sincerely believe that homosexuality is wrong, and just as sincerely can't help how they are.

I've no reason to believe that Al Gore is anything but sincere in his environmental policies. But, there are certain realities to be taken into account here. One, it's hard to be taken seriously as a political force in this country when you live in a shack. Two, I don't recall Al Gore ever saying that people shouldn't be able to live in nice, even opulent homes. I do recall him saying that we need more environmentally friendly means of producing power. And of course, with cleaner energy, it doesn't matter as much how you use. Hell, if Al Gore's house drew its power strictly from nuclear plants, he could run every electrical appliance known to man all day long without requiring much in the way of extra mining, drilling, or pollution. In short: using energy is only a problem when getting that energy is a problem.

Now, at the end of the day, I'm not a big fan of Al Gore or his policies. But a fairly negligible amount of hypocrisy is being blown waaaay out of proportion here.

Completely disagree. If Al Gore moved into a shack, I would most certainly listen to him and it would prove that his doomsday speeches have shaken him to his core and is making the personal sacrifice to fix it.

correlation != causation

i seriously doubt, for example, adding solar panels or thermal-heating units were the cause of the increased power. It could be that after he added those items, total power consumption in the house increased 30% because of, i don't know, running a whole bank of Mac Pros doing climate simulations, and the increase activity was offset only partially so his external power usage went up 20%.

lay down the blunt buddy

you're saying the price of power has been constant? do you know this to be a fact? do you know that there were no other changes to the house which could cause the bills to go up. 5 new hot tubs, a pool, more people living there? the use of plug in hybrids?

please continue with your ignorant assumptions. they amuse me. greatly

according to this same place you're getting your numbers from, Gore used 221kWh in 2006 and 213kWh in 2007.

http://www.tennesseepolicy.org/main/article.php?article_id=367

Please show me where this rise in energy usage is.

well, if you look at the article from feb 2007 it says he used 221,000kwh per year
and the new article says he uses 213,000kwh per year.

so. . . that tells me that he has decreased his consumption during 2007 even while the renovations were still going on.
