so i set up my g/f with a wep enabled wireless network on her Netgear WGR614v6 router b/c her neighbors were abusing her signal by overloading the bandwidth (probably torrents, etc)

for some reason her roommate couldnt get the WEP key to recognize on her computer, even with the confirmed correct encryption bitrate etc, but this was after i had left town for the weekend...so all i could do is try to have her enter the WEP keys i left written down (i double checked them all)

so her network worked, but then they wanted to redo it to try to get her roommate on it, so i had her reset the router over the phone, back to the factory settings, so atleast they could both have internet access off the default NETGEAR SSID. she says that the router has now stopped broadcasting a signal, which if i know anything about routers (which i know some but only enough to set them up and leave them alone), shouldn't be an issue because it should basically just start broadcasting the NETGEAR SSID unsecured, correct? i dont need to go into the router to configure just to get that...

i havent played with Netgear in a while, and mine is a linksys at home, so i can't walk through it on mine.

so what am i not doing to get it to start broadcasting a signal again? the internet connectivity light is definitely on and blinking, and the cable modem works, becasue you can direct connect to it and get the internet.

any thoughts or experiences with this previously are welcome

my netgear router starts itself with the wireless disabled by default. She will need to plug into the wired ports to setup the initial config.

If she goes to the router's ip after a reset it will have a setup wizard thats pretty brainless to walk through and get it working and broadcasting.

that sounds like the issue then

my linksys auto-broadcasts...seems more intuitive i guess, maybe not though...probably always better to run a setup of some sort

i just didnt feel like walking through all that with her on the phone

Theres a way to bypass the setup, but i forgot what it was :-P. But like I said, the setup really doesn't require much thought to get it working. It pretty much figures out if you're going to get DHCP or PPPoE from your modem and then asks you what you want for an SSID and then you're up and running.

As for the roommate, what does she have for a comp?

dell (not sure of OS, but probably XP)

ive run into this problem before with a previous roommate personally...for whatever reason, it didnt want to accept the WEP key even at the same encryption bitrate (64, with 10 characters or whatever), but it worked for two other people's in the house (all running XP)

i forgot how we ended up working around it but eventually we got it working

if you're trying to use the passphrase and its not working, you could put in the full key.

no i always use the full key just out of habit
