ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -- Scott Kalitta died Saturday when his Funny Car crashed and burst into flames during qualifying for the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

State police confirmed that the 46-year-old Kalitta, a two-time Top Fuel champion who had 18 career victories, was killed in the accident.

Witnesses told The Star-Ledger of Newark that Kalitta's Toyota Solara was traveling at an estimated speed of 300 mph when the crash occurred.

The Palmetto, Fla., resident started his career at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in 1982. His father, Connie Kalitta, was a longtime driver and team owner known as "The Bounty Hunter," and his cousin, Doug Kalitta, also drives competitively.

they showed a replay on espn2 a little while ago.

he had a good run going and toward the end of the track there's a huge explosion, chutes never go or anything. slams right into the wall at the end of the track going about 300 mph, huge explosion.

I'm surprised they haven't talked to John Force yet (unless I missed it already). The Force Team would be the best to talk to, unless they are all with the Kalitta family.

Why is there a wall at the end of the track?

^usually simply because of space limitations. the track's already 1/4 mile plus room to slow down under normal conditions.

Couldn't it just be open-ended or with some kind of runnaway-truck-style sand trap? Seems a little strange to have a solid wall there for people to crash into if anything goes wrong.

they have the sand and some type of catch netting I believe. But if you have a relatively heavy vehicle going well over 150 there's not much those things can do.

yeah, i think they had it padded with sand or something, but at 300 mph it just as well had been a brick wall

was there a cameraman up in that crane near the end of that video or was it remote controlled?

Irregardless of space limitations, there shouldn't have been a wall there. If there had to be for whatever reason, it shouldn't have been a solid concrete one.

supposedly there's a state road a couple of hundred feet on the other side of that wall

not even a couple hundred feet. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Englishtown+raceway,+Monmouth,+New+Jersey,+United+States&ie=UTF8&ll=40.330483,-74.350888&spn=0.006298,0.01781&t=h&z=17

Looks like there's a full 2200ft after the finish to shut down, 100ft of sand before the wall, and then another 100 ft to the trees and road.

^^^hahahahahhahahaha, what kinda troll shit is that?

if someone wants to risk their own life legally going over 300 mph, what's the problem?

hell, let's ban skydiving, boxing, etc etc etc

hey, i think a guy died once playing football, let's ban that too. you know, because he was forced to risk his life.

no seriously lets ban these glorified street races

football players arent attached to engines that blow up and send body parts into the stands

football, boxers, etc at least die while being exciting

plus racing is pretty lame to watch, at least speedboats can fly

we aint runnin' 'shine no more
