everyone around you?

Got this nice ass klipsch (sp?) system and had the fight scene in Heat and the last Harry Potter BLASTING.

Got up to -10. Receiver goes to +11.5.

Now all the apartments around me are being loud to counteract my loudness.

Nah I usually don't do that. Doing it just to be a dick is inviting somebody to try to come over and murder me.

-10dB sounds weak

i mean isn't a whisper considered like 10dB?

-33 dB is about what you'd listen to TV at with normal volume. At least it is for me.

[Edited on June 23, 2008 at 8:26 PM. Reason : We're talking about the scale used on nice audio equipment, not absolute scale.]

The dB is just what the speaker says on the display.

but whatever it converts to as far as what I hear, -10dB is really fucking loud.

so much misconception in this thread...

your -10dB on a power scale from the maximum rated output at the full rated distortion or something along those lines... the +11dB probably is with a side of extra distortion...

receivers have specific dynamic ranges, they are typically designed with a very wide gain profile so that you can hook up a vast array of input devices to them. As far as I know there's not really a solid standard on output levels from audio devices... theres just kinda a general accepted level. Various receivers will make full rated power at 0dBm with some known specific input like 1VAC. So some devices are going to output .25VAC and will require an additional 6dB to compensate for the lack and still make full power, whereas something are going to output 4V and -6dB will be full rated power... so it's entirely easy to go to 0dBm if your running out of your weak ass computer headphone jacks...

I'm sure it's plenty loud... I'm just saying "-10 on my receiver" doesn't really mean all that much... combined with your expression that "it's loud" and that your playing out off a DVD player then sure... It's a more worthwhile statement to simply say the title of the thread then going into the ignorance of stating the output level of a receiver... (I metered 127dB in my living room )

id trust gofigure on this stuff btw (dont you work with brad, i'd trust him haha)

i need it more dumDed down though, im not an audiophile by any means.... just got my little AL setuo.... doesnt the -10 to +10 stuff we see something liek within the.... EQ spectrum or whatever??? and certain ends are multiplied? ill try to find a pic of my winamp EQ... but for now:

all i know is i have this for my desktop and 2.1 and its all i need for in this room and it sounds great, and it was 50 bucks like 4 years ago, so its like 20 now i bet

stopdropnrol was there when I metered my house... I had just got done metering his H2 a while back... 127dB in a living room is pretty mind numbing...

I'm in Boston for the summer, but I'll be glad to meter your house as long as your somewhere around campus for a beer or something...

I was just pointing out misconceptions people often use in the audio world and explaining how audio amplifiers are typically setup... I didn't say that yours wasn't loud and I'm not trying to pick a fight. I have a masters degree in circuit design... trust me on this stuff... I admit to blurring the power/voltage dB scale a little when I was talking about inputs, however it's correct in context...

To jacklegs question... the + on an equalizer is above and below the current relative level... I used to work at Northrop but Brad and I never worked together... never even introduced ourselves really... I'm back at NCSU doing my masters and probably PhD

[Edited on June 23, 2008 at 10:20 PM. Reason : equalizer question]

[Edited on June 23, 2008 at 10:22 PM. Reason : attempt at grammar... probably still sucks]

I have this nice Bose system that I usually use to blast STUPID shit out of my room to piss off any roommates. (And it actually worked, this one is moving out today.)
Like, lately it's been 'Still Alive' the ending song from Portal, or Disney shit. Last week I put the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Musical Soundtrack on repeat at obscene volume, while playing Starcraft.

makes sense. I've always wondered why they use such a "useless" scale like that.

LOL@10dB!
